I believe Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once attempted to kill of Sherlock Holmes by having him and Moriarty both go over a waterfall... and there was such a fan outcry that he went back and wrangled out a way to let Sherlock survive. I vaguely recall hearing something like this at some point.
Yeah, I this was supposed to be a modern adaptation of that story. According to the summary I read, though, Sherlock's "death" in that one was left vague (Watson just finds footprints leading to a waterfall, and none back, or something like that.) This adaptation's "death" scene was waaaay clearer and more detailed.
