I think that makes perfect sense, and I agree with you. I'm glad you brought Mystery Spot into it, because Sam already spent a year learning what a soulless person he'd become without Dean if he kept hunting. I think it's perfectly valid for Sam not to look for Dean--everyone he loved ever is dead or gone. Where did Dean go? How can Sam get there?
I think this series has been tonally off, but I think Sam not looking for Dean is totally legit.

I enjoyed the first two episodes. I definitely want to know more about Benny and what happened to Cas.
I'm not so sure about about the pastel soft-focus Sam flashbacks. They could turn that down a little, it's a little hard on the eyes. I like the colours they've used for purgatory though.
