AU BACKGROUND: Yellow was born in the small town of Viridian, in an isolated corner of the mountains of Vermont. This town was built on the outskirts of a large, old-growth forest, and local legend stated that once in a while, the forest would “bless” someone born close to it. While the benefits of the forest are debatable, there is no question that the inhabitants of this small, isolated town had a higher incidence of mild nature-communication abilities, possibly due to a smaller gene pool for the X-gene to flourish in, or perhaps hitherto unknown environmental factors.
Whatever the case may be, Yellow was born and christened Amarillo del Bosque Verde. Such a name might seem...surprising, considering neither of her parents has any Spanish-speaking ancestry. The answer: they were hippies, and shut up, it’s Pokemon canon, be glad it makes any sense at all.

In her early years, Yellow’s powers remained mostly dormant. She was homeschooled by her hippie parents (and occasionally taken fishing on Lake Ontario with her uncle Wilton, with whom she is very close), and from an early age, Yellow was made aware of the dangers that the environment faced from humans. She was, however, also taught that life in any form is incredibly precious, and that it should never be taken in order to make a point, or for any other reason if feasible.

Yellow was lucky to have been raised in a very mutant-friendly area (if only because she was less identified as a mutant so much as one “blessed by the Viridian Forest”), as it sheltered her at a young age from the fear and hate associated with mutants in other areas. However, when she was about eleven, a series of attacks on people in the areas surrounding Vermont’s capital city began raising anti-mutant sentiment in the area. Yellow had been on a backpacking expedition with her parents at the time, and she managed to use her powers to communicate with the wildlife and track down the perpetrator: an older boy, about eighteen or nineteen-another resident of Viridian with the same mutant powers as Yellow. He had been training birds of prey to attack humans, but with Yellow’s efforts and the help of some friends, they brought him to justice and foiled his plans.

After that, her parents conceded that Yellow deserved to broaden her horizons and develop her potential. They placed a call to Professor Xavier a few months later, and made arrangements for Yellow to be sent to Xavier Academy.

PERSONALITY: Yellow is a total sweetheart. She loves all animals and wants to be friends with all of them, even the ones that want to bite her face off. She’s a little shy around people she’s never met, but that wears off very quickly once she gets to know them. Yellow believes in the essential goodness of people, and wants to make the world a better place.

Despite this, she’s not too naïve. She possesses a strong determination that is not easily shaken once she sets out to do something. If one of her friends is in trouble, she will do everything she can to help that friend out. Yellow is a little frightened by the idea of change, being on that strange cusp between childhood and adolescence. Seeing anyone, human or animal, get hurt in front of her makes her upset.

There are only two things you can ever do to make Yellow angry. One: continue disturbing nature after she has respectfully asked you to stop and explained why what you are doing is wrong. Two: hurt Yellow’s friends. If you do either of those things with a bad enough attitude in front of her, our best advice is to run. And keep running. Imagine every animal in the immediate vicinity charging for your neck, suddenly much stronger and much faster than they should naturally be. Yeah.

APPEARANCE:  Yellow’s most distinguishing feature is her ability to pass as a boy with her hat on. She is short for her age, and rather scrawny. She has no especially feminine features to speak of, aside from her long blonde hair, which when pulled up and tucked into her hat becomes invisible. She has very reflective light amber eyes that usually look gold unless you get up close.

She dresses very simply-usually a sturdy long-sleeved shirt and vest, and long pants that tuck into a pair of boots. This is likely due to the amount of time she spends outside, working with the animals she loves. She also usually wears a belt with pouches on it to carry things. Yellow is rarely seen without her trademark hat, a large wide-brimmed straw hat that she tucks her ponytail into. It has two feathers stuck into the brim, one silvery and one gold.

POWERS:  Yellow can best be described as a “nature-path:” (please give me a better word) someone possessed of mental abilities that affect and are affected by nature. She has the ability to, at moderately close range, read the thoughts, memories, and feelings of animals and to mentally communicate with them. This power seems to be affected by her environment; she can do so more easily and freely with less recovery time in a quiet forest, for example, than in a crowded city. When she has spent a certain amount of time with another animal (like her pet rat, Ratty), and gets to know it, she can also “sync her heart” with that companion-that is, affect its natural strength and stamina based on her own feelings. For example, Ratty may seem tame and well-behaved when she is calm, but if you somehow do something to make her truly angry, beware-OH GOD SUDDENLY AN UNNATURALLY LARGE ANGRY RAT IS IN YOUR FACE-

She also has a mild form of telekinesis, but it is limited to small items, and works best when they are already in motion-for example, she would find it almost impossible to lift a rock sitting across the room, but she finds it simple to move a rock at the end of a fishing line in ways that mere physics can’t explain. It seems to have something to do with kinetic energy-it may be that she can redirect the natural energy present in something already in motion.

Most importantly, though, Yellow has the ability to heal others by touching them. This ability extends most easily to animals, and tires her a bit more quickly than using her other abilities, but she can also heal humans if she tries very hard (though that would tire her extremely fast and may be dangerous until she develops her powers more effectively).

When Yellow uses her powers for extended periods of time, she becomes tired. If she pushes herself too hard, she may become too drowsy and fall asleep on the spot. For now, Yellow’s powers are limited to just those above, but as she grows, her abilities and stamina will grow as well. Eventually, she will also be able to use her telepathy and healing on humans without passing out, and her telekinetic abilities will improve as well.

ANYTHING ELSE?: Yellow is very easily confused for a boy-it is, in fact, how she managed to disguise her identity long enough to get close to the ecoterrorist she brought down. She won’t actively lie about her gender, but she won’t go out of her way to correct anyone, either. She’s found it’s often easier to do things and get places if people think you’re a young boy versus a young girl, sad to say.

She also has a pet rat named Ratty. :D And she keeps track of all her “friends” by drawing their pictures in a notebook she keeps on her at all times. It’s rather adorable.
