Oh, bb. This is beautiful! *sigh* so romantic, and painful, and gorgeous. I love the way you tell such a compelling story with so few words, but the words you choose carry such strength and weight that they just explode into all these colors and textures that bring the story to life. I love that you took their very public lives, and in the middle of it all, gave them a secret garden. Every single thing you write is stunning.
And I forgot to say - you've so perfectly described that feeling of something/someone in the past that's almost forgotten, but then something brings it all right back so suddenly it just leaves you breathless for a minute. I think we've all experienced that with someone at some point, and I love how Adam is going about his life but every now and then, something brings to mind Kris and the garden and everything stops. (11th grade. He sore a leather jacket, carried a knife in his motorcycle boot, and had freckles. For years after, certain smells and sounds would bring back every detail. Your story made me think of him again, so thank you for that, too!)
Mine had peaches and cream skin, a honey-dipped voice (he was playing Tony in West Side Story when we met), and a black belt in karate. I shall resist the urge to google him, as nothing good could possibly come of that. (Also, I see leather and freckles are sort of a trend for you.)
Thank you for your beautiful comment, especially this: I love that you took their very public lives, and in the middle of it all, gave them a secret garden. I think that's the heart of what I want for them in all my stories...a safe and private place for them to love one another.
