Player Name: Ruki
Character Name: Suzu Fujibayashi
Canon: Tales of Phantasia
Background:
Tales wikia link Setting Information:
World Name Aselia
Canon Name Tales of Phantasia
Ability Changes:
Mana generated from the
World Tree Yggdrasill is the source of all magic in the land. It is healthy at this time, thankfully.
Ability Limitations: No limitations.
Form Restrictions: The main sentient races are humans, elves, and half-elves. Anything else are monsters.
Social Restrictions: Mass prejudice against half-elves for no apparent reason, though they are very skilled at magic. Elves keep to themselves, secluded in the Ymir Forest, and humans are everywhere else.
Notes: There are Summon Spirits floating around, but one requires to be a legitimate Summoner in order to contract them, and by 'legitimate', in the sense that one needs to beat them in combat and possess the right item of the pact in order to establish one.
Additional Information:
The World of Aselia. There is also a sword that can travel through time lying around somewhere, for those interested.
Portal Location: At the base of the exact tree where Suzu first met Cless' party, in order to take them to the hidden ninja village inside Treantwood.
Personality:
Suzu is, first and foremost, a child who couldn't be a child. Despite being 11 when the event of "Tales of Phantasia" occurred, Suzu is, at first sight and even beyond, extremely mature. Strictly disciplined, of few words, and very composed, she can well behave as someone twice her age. That is easily explained by her background; born to be the next chief of Japoni, she went through harsh and severe training, both physical and mental, ever since she was a child. Taught to commit otherwise heinous acts as long as it is for her village, and raised with the credo that one must shed aside all emotion when performing a task ordered by the master, she was forced to cut out her emotions and try as hard as she could to be a perfect, cold, and ruthless killer, as being a ninja would require of her. She may not have that many responsibilities pile on her yet, but she is fully aware of the full weight of everyone's expectations of her, for she will one day lead the village that taught her. Pressured to excel and be as flawless as she can to abide by the codes of Japoni, she had no choice but to shut down her heart of a child, and take up the mannerisms of an adult.
Suzu, however, is also a child who couldn't help being a child. These obligations still could not change who she was. No amount of teaching and training could equal experience, so when she was sent out on a serious and crucial mission to gather intelligence on why a large number of skilled ninjas of her village, including both her parents, disappeared, she was badly outmatched by adults who were far more seasoned to battles. She was found injured and losing when the party first came across her in Volt's Cave, when she fought people from her own clan, after being unable to reason with them due to Dhaos' brainwash. She is also hard on herself for her failures: knowing that her parents' death were in part her own fault, caused by her inability to resolve the incident that claimed so many of her own people by herself, she refuses to enter Euclid castle every time the party goes there, preferring to stay outside and wait. With the lack of skits in earlier Tales games, there is little material to go off for Suzu's personality, but her childish heart still showed through, when she finally took the party to the hidden village to meet her grandfather. There, she showed emotion and rashly expressed her concerns for her fellow villagers, only to be quietened by her grandfather, and chided for her excitability. She tried to live up to the role of an adult thrust upon her in times of disaster, but in the end, she was just a little girl who could have used a friend like anyone else.
It is hinted canonly that she has a light crush on Cless, but I'll also include here some of my headcanon. Japoni was already a very secluded village, so its people must have been close, but even then, I picture Suzu to have had a rather lonely childhood. She would certainly be allowed to play with the other kids, but Japoni wasn't a big place, and on top of there probably not having a lot of children her age to begin with, she was also going to become chief the moment she was born. That kind of status would probably erect an invisible barrier between her and the rest of the populace as well: no one would fault her for her lack of abilities, seeing that she was still so young, but a distance of respect would probably be kept, towards the daughter of the current chief of the village.
That is why Cless' party might be the first people to have taken her in and not treated her as such. Chester lost his little sister Ami when his home village was sacked, so it's possible that he saw this new young girl as a surrogate little sister. Mint is motherly in nature, so she could have acted as a kind aunt/older sister figure. Klarth is the old man, but funny enough, they could have some hilarious snark, seeing that Suzu may behave even more maturely than Klarth, the oldest of the party, and as for Arche...
Bubbly and upbeat, she may be Suzu's first true friend. Together, they have taught her that steeling your heart and doing your best alone can accomplish only so much, but together with friends and fueled by your passions, one can achieve so much more. It's with them that she mellowed out more to be the young girl that she truly is, and it is during these travels that she understood the importance to strike a balance between emotion and discipline.
So even when her parents' deaths greatly affected her, Cless and company taught her to move on and grow. She wasn't alone, and it was also with her friends' support that she managed to clear the coming-of-age ritual to establish herself as a full-fledged ninja. Sure, she still had to stick by the codes of her village, but that didn't change the fact that she can't eat spicy food to save her life, and has a hidden deredere for sweets. She's doing her best to optimize both sides, but she's not quite there yet: her emotions still get the better of her occasionally, driving her to make rash statements; when caught on a slip-up, she's likely to stutter, and when her guard is down, her fidgeting would easily give her away. Regardless, all in all, Suzu would fit the kuudere archetype well, which is why once she loosens, she makes a very good deadpan loli - that and little miss snarker, your mileage may vary.
...Okay I'll stop quoting TV Tropes. |D; The "Viva Tales Of" and "Tales of Fandom II" really reflect this. Being able to put up a perfect lineface also means that for a little girl, Suzu has already attained a perfect poker face. It allows her to say hilarious things without changing expression ("Old people smell." ...Poor Klarth?), and no one can tell if she really meant it as a joke, or was perfectly serious. ...Probably a bit of both. She also tends to do this more around friends; she can pull Arche's leg too if she tries, just because of norm, she's always so serious. Proven by Tales of Fandom II, when Arche insisted on Suzu giving her ninja training, and the little kunoichi shamelessly made cracks aiming to break Arche's concentration when she's meditating, such as mentioning melon bread, Arche's favorite food, to make her react. After many failures, she goes so far as to tell Arche that she is hopeless in becoming a ninja, but she can be one if she manages to pass one final trial: to walk on water! ...Which Arche tries and then fails miserably, only to have Suzu comment to herself on the background that of course this would happen; walking on water is impossible, after all. :| Either way, especially after the growth that she has experienced post-game, Suzu has learned to relax a little and crack a few jokes, though it may just be unfortunate for her friends that her way of teasing the people that she cared about is by way of deadpan snark/sarcasm. She even managed to 1up Jade when he asked her to go out for Curry, intentionally or not, and doing that to Jade Curtiss is definitely a feat, no matter who you are.
In the end, she's a kind-hearted and serious little girl who takes her responsibilities to heart. Honest and humble, she knows her faults and does her best to correct them. Diligent and hard-working, she will do everything in her power to accomplish her tasks and come up to others' expectations. Perceptive and understanding, she can remain unbiased and coolly access situations (the reasons why she joined Cless not out of vengeance towards Dhaos, but out of the desire to help the party to repay them for helping her find her parents, and for better or worse, wrap up that entire matter). Loyal and reliable, she will not hesitate to help a friend in need, so even when her girlish heart and professional behaviour awkwardly clash, she... means well and tries hard.
Reason for Joining: The moment that Suzu learns that becoming an agent won't significantly alter her everyday life in Japoni would be the moment that she takes up the position willingly. She may have traveled the world to help save it with Cless, but she is also mature enough to be aware of her lack of experience, among other shortcomings. She'll be a great chief one day, but that day is still far off. In the meanwhile, not only would this be an excellent opportunity, to gain new experience and meet new people, which she now knows are essential to living, it would also make her glad as well, to know that she is actively helping somewhere else to prevent similar cases of what happened to Aselia.
...And of course, there is the hidden reason of her concerns for Arche. Since she's from a future timeline, Cless, Mint, Klarth, and Chester would be old people by then - if not dead, and Arche would have outlived them all by being a half-elf. It is why the girls probably did not lose contact after the game ended; with a broom, it should be child's play for Arche to sneak into Treantwoods too. Suzu'd be worried and want to keep her friend out of trouble as much as she can, so if it means working alongside Arche (again), then no matter what mess the quirky half-elf might drag her into (again), she'll still willingly follow, and stay by Arche's side. The half-elf has done the same for her too, after all.
Position Desired: Agent. While Suzu has indeed been trained to become a leader ever since she was small, maybe making her eligible to be an Enforcer,, she is humble enough to recognize her own lack of experience and the need to become stronger, especially after witnessing her parents' death, and going through the ninja coming-of-age ritual.
That, and if Arche of all people dragged her, she'd have no say in it. Not because she's that pushy - no, because it's Arche, and she'd be worried herself if she lets her reckless friend go into something so potentially dangerous on her own. :|; RE: "Let's Go Arche!"
Point in Canon: Post-game, two years after the game's events. Including "Let's Go Arche" (I'll treat the minigame's events as things that actually happened).
Notes: Someone mention the Eternal Sword. I want to know how many people would try to get it, 8|; ALSO VOLT. I wonder if anyone'll ever understand him. :|a Dhaos is also a tree hugger.

Interview:
What brings you to Confuto Ordinatio?: I would like to apply to become an Agent.
What family members do you think were most influential into making you who you are today?: ...My parents, and my grandfather.
So how 'bout them Tenbraks eh? Eh? Catch the game? 52-7, I told Janice in Accounting, I said "those Balthims, they're just not up to snuff this year," but no, she said "I'll bet you 20 plat they're gonna take the banner." Take that bet I did, she still insists they'll turn it around though. Ain't that a riot?: ...The terms used were "slangs", weren't they? ...How was it relevant to the application?... [Her face is impassive, and she does look a bit genuinely confused. It might just be a good poker face too, though; it's very hard to tell.]
What inspired you to apply for an Agent Position?: [... ...] I would like to learn more about the other worlds, as well as do what I can to maintain its stability. [Another uncertain but short pause.] I also have a friend whom I was unaware until now to be an agent, so I'd like to support her too.
What skills do you think you'll bring to this agency?: I can gather information and fight, though I specialize in stealth. It may not be much, but I do hope that I may be able to help as an Agent, no matter how little that may be.
You sound like you'll be a wonderful match, but you know, rules and procedures and all that so I've got a few more questions for you.:
[A small and quiet nod.]
Do you have a history of meddling in affairs you shouldn't be meddling in?: [She looks ready to give a short and blunt answer, but then looks conflicted.] ...No, at least... Not out of my own will. [Truth. ...Gdit Arche. :|;]
Do you consider yourself a hero of justice?: No. I may have traveled with Cless and his friends, but it is them who are the true heroes of Aselia.
Have you ever wanted to work for something bigger than yourself?: ...? It is what I strive for. Leading the village will be an enormous responsibility, so I am doing my best to become a worthy chief.
Looks like I was right. You're a great fit here, glad to have you on board!: Thank you very much for your time. [She bows politely.]
