Grandma

Jul 03, 2004 13:26

Today my grandma decided not to go to dialysis. She said she hates it there. She said she also hates the nursing home and wants to go to heaven.
My aunt is at her bedside waiting for her to die.

I'm sorry for you and your family having to go through this and, I am trained never to say, "I know how you feel," but, having been on a dialysis unit, I can't, myself, imagine having to live like that, especially if you're elderly. Of course, you do what you have to do, but some of the people were already so weak, that being there day after day for hours and hours just didn't seem like much of a life.

Were you/are you able to say good-bye?

I hope they keep her as comfortable as possible. She'll leave here knowing she is loved forever.

You are right, it's no way to live. She often says she's going to dialysis to stay alive just to go to dialysis to stay alive.
She had a stroke, they think, on Friday and she really noticed her mind being jumbled after. She was having a hard time with finding words, etc. I know she does not want to live without her mind. So she decided to quit. As of 11 am today (sunday) she is still alive. I feel terrible that my aunt is with her alone just waiting.
I was able to see her when I was home for a week. She also got to see Juulia "perform" (I swear when she's got an audience...) and that made her really happy. I called yesterday but she couldn't talk, too dozy, so I just told her that I love her.
She is comfortable, which is the most important thing.
Thanks for your post.
