Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
Their comeback stages had been successful. Their album was selling great and they were topping all charts. All members of DBSK were relieved to have received these amazing responses from their fans - the only thing that was left to do was waiting for reviews of professionals. Most of the times the reviews would fit the public opinion but there would always be some tips to help DBSK improve.
When they had had their last comeback stage on Inkigayo, they decided to celebrate. They went to a restaurant where they stuffed their mouths with food and drank till they couldn’t think straight anymore. Or well, that was what they had wanted to do.
Jaejoong didn’t dare to touch the alcohol, especially not when Jae Sun was sitting on the same table as him.
“Hyuung, you drink too!” Junsu said, trying to pour soju in Jaejoong’s empty glass. However, the older guy had expected this moment and he immediately caught the bottle of soju midair.
“No, I told you I had stopped drinking.” Jaejoong said sharply, looking at his dongsaeng. He had learned his lesson the last time he had been drinking. Never ever again would he want to find himself in the same situation.
“Don’t be a party pooper! I know you love drinking!” Junsu whined, trying to fill Jaejoong’s glass again.
“No, it’s bad for my voice and it’s not good for my body as well. I want to live healthy so I won’t collapse because of the stress we will receive these days.” Jaejoong said. Part of it was true, though it wasn’t the biggest reason why he was refusing to drink.
“I feel guilty for drinking this now.” Yoochun laughed. He continued to tease, “C’mon, just one glass. To toast on our comeback! Normally, we have to beg you to stop drinking, since when do we have to beg you to start drinking? Don’t be a party pooper!”
Jaejoong smiled nervously, absolutely not wanting to touch a glass of alcohol again. He saw Changmin from the corner of his eye, nodding his head in agreement. Tsh, betrayer.
He wasn’t sure if he could stop after one glass of alcohol. He was used to drinking a lot but Jaejoong was afraid his members would persuade him into drinking more. And he was very scared that the Jae Sun-incident would repeat itself; Jae Sun himself was even in this very room. Who knew, he could just put something in his drinks again.
“Guys, leave him alone. You shouldn’t force someone to drink when he doesn’t want to, I bet Jaejoong has his own reasons for refusing alcohol. He can still toast without drinking alcohol, right?” Yunho interrupted his squabbling members.
Jaejoong let out a relieved sigh.

“What? You aren’t kidding me, right?” Jaejoong exclaimed, looking at Yunho’s face. His expression was earnest… Were they trying to prank him? “Is this a hidden camera?” He asked, letting his eyes wander the room, searching for cameras.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to be the one who would deliver the bad news but well… I guess you’ll discover this sooner or later… You should take a look yourself…” Yunho said, handing him several pages. The pages were from different sources; some were printed internet articles, some were articles from magazines and others were from newspapers.
Jaejoong grabbed the papers and frantically started scanning the articles. The first one read: In short, DBSK is stepping things up with their comeback album. It received a great response from their fans and critics. Everyone has improved a lot, one more than the other, and they are ready to show the world their flourishing talents. It’s only disappointing that Jaejoong’s vocals are being overshadowed by the others while he is the supposed main vocalist.
His heart stood still as he read the last sentence. He held his breath as he could feel the burning of prickling tears. Trying to blink the signs of weakness away, he continued reading another article. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better, DBSK is proving us wrong again. The album is absolutely amazing though SM absolutely needs to consider making Junsu the main vocalist.
His hands trembled while reading the articles, one after the other. They all said the same thing: Dong Bang Shin Ki’s main vocalist shouldn’t be Kim Jaejoong. He bit his lip, trying to control his tears as he tried to wrap his head around the criticisms. He couldn’t keep up with the improvements of the other members, his singing voice had lost its charm, he shouldn’t be the main vocalist, he should give some of his singing lines to the other members, etc. The list went on and on.
The hurt was tremendous. Not only was he described as someone not worthy the position he had been given in his team, his hard work was barely getting any recognition. He tried to swallow away his tears, biting his lip so hard he could taste the copper taste of blood. His pride was hurt as well. Maybe it was selfish, but he didn’t want to be the weakest link in DBSK. All these articles were a huge slap in the face. Yet… he realized they were so true.
“Don’t read this anymore…” Yunho said, eyeing his friend carefully. He had seen the expression of hurt on Jaejoong’s face. He reached out to the papers, gently tugging on Jaejoong’s fingers which had been clenching the papers desperately. The trembling hands loosened its grip on the papers and Yunho took the articles as fast as possible. “We faced this kind of situations before. We were always stronger.” He said, pulling Jaejoong into a hug. He let his hand rub soothing circles on Jaejoong’s hitching back as he realized the man in his arms was crying. He cried tears of pride, shame and disappointment. But above all, he cried because he had let his members down.
-
“Can you please give me something strong?” Jaejoong said, placing his body on a chair at the bar. It was the same club as last time but he couldn’t care less. He just wanted to forget everything. “I don’t care what it is, give me the strongest you have.”
“Jaejoong? What are you doing here?” a familiar voice screamed in his ear, trying to make itself heard over the thumping music. Jaejoong turned his face, suddenly looking into the eyes of someone very familiar. Jae Sun. “Hey, don’t look at me like that! I told you I wouldn’t dare to do something to you again.” After he said these words, he sat next to him, ordering another drink.
Ignoring the man next to him, Jaejoong grabbed his drink and knocked the content inside his mouth. The burning taste of the heavy alcohol made him feel a lot better. “Give me another one, please,” he said, before turning to his friend. Without saying a word Jaejoong let his hands run through Jae Sun’s pockets, ignoring Jae Sun’s protests, until he found a little bag with powder. He moved his head closer to Jae Sun’s, looking him in the eye and Jae Sun could smell the heavy smell of alcohol on Jaejoong’s breath as he spoke:
“I hope you don’t mind sharing.”
A smirk appeared on Jae Sun’s face. “Never.”
