Kittens, camping, food thoughts.

I really hope so, because yesterday was the last day of their meds and i'm really tired of medicating them. SUCH a pain in the butt. They're starting to grow ( Read more... )

We got that one flier at the famer's market stand - is that the butcher you're talking about?

Also, I'm a little wary about the practice, but apparently it's possible to order organic meat online?

I'll have to go to a large chain store if i want organic meat.

Since you're already talking about getting lots and freezing it, you may want to check out Roots in Clarksville, MOM's (My Organic Market) local small chain in Columbia/Jessup, or an Amish market. The Amish stuff may not be certified with all the expensive paperwork, but on the rare occasions I buy meat for large gatherings, I trust it.

i'm quite happy with small-farm meat even if it's not organic. Happy cows, not-excessively exploited cows, and intentionally organically raised cows are all fine by me. I'll definately check those places out.

I've found being more closely involved in my community this way very satisfying. Working on a farm 2 summers ago really made it all click for me. The freshness/ripeness/taste that you get when it's not shipped all over the earth just can't be beat :)
And it's also been cheaper, especially from the produce stand. Fresh veggies are so damned expensive. I'm pretty sure the produce in the Turkish grocery i frequent is imported from some under-paid, ass-poor country, but the fact that I'm paying a local, small business owner for it, and getting less shafted for it makes a big difference to me.
I thought it would be more inconvenient, but being able to buy more really helps offset any sense of inconvenience. The atmosphere is a bit nicer and more interesting too. *shrug* those are more ephemeral reasons, mostly it's the first two. I'm not opposed to globalization really, i'm valuing the local economy and enjoying participating in it.
