Seems I only update this thing to post a word of the week ficlet thing, doesn't it?

Oh well. It's a Firefly/Serenity one this time and if you don't know what those are, then we don't have much to talk about. ;)

Title: A Gift Between Sisters
Author: Moi
Rating: Really G
A/N: I have a massive thing for fluff lately. Just go with it.
Word: Kaleidoscope

River was ten when their mother brought home a new contraption.

She called it a kaleidoscope. She said that they had been very popular on Earth-That-Was and Simon, being the self-proclaimed scholar of the family, took the encyclopedia, a gift from his grandparents, off of the shelf in his room and checked this fact before agreeing. They had been popular, though the kaleidoscopes on Earth-That-Was were made of cardboard or plastic. The one their mother brought home was made of metal.

River was enchanted by it. She wouldn't let it out of her sight for a week, at the least. "Look at this design!" She would cry when Simon entered a room she had secreted her in, thrusting the toy into his hands. He'd carefully move it to his eye, trying not to move the colored beads from the exact pattern his baby sister wanted to show him. "Yes, very pretty," He'd agree, and hand it back to her.

They were out on a rare walk, when River's eyes went wide and she rushed from the safety of his side to press her face into a store window. Kaylee, who had chosen to accompany them looked confused. Simon, however, knew exactly what could elicit a response from his sister like that.

A kaleidoscope.

She wanted to get it, but Simon had left all of the money he'd earned and saved, and her wages from the very few jobs she'd gone on, on Serenity. If in the off chance that Alliance picked them up, better that the money go to Serenity and her inhabitants.

Simon smiled at her, and gently pried her away from the window. With a apologetic glance to Kaylee, who nodded to show that she understood, he slowly guided River back to the ship, talking to her of a joke she could play on Jayne. The kaleidoscope quickly fell from her mind until later that evening when, deep into orbit, Kaylee announced that she had a present for River.

Surprise registered on everyone's faces, except River's of course. She undoubtedly knew exactly what Kaylee was going to give her but she fidgeted in her seat anyway. The second after Kaylee placed the present in front of her, River ripped away the makeshift wrapping, gasped, and gave the giver a quick one armed hug before holding her present to her eye and turning the metal tube, a wondrous smile on her face the entire time.

Simon watched his sister for a few moments and then looked at Kaylee. "You didn't have to." He said softly.

Kaylee shrugged. "Call it a gift between sisters," She murmured.
