The ConclusionOkie! I think we've covered this pretty well and, at this point, I think we'll veer more into harm than help to keep going. As it's already upset people, that's more than enough (I'm so sorry, guys). So, I'm going to be closing this topic now. This is not the iron boot of authority stamping down, if you want to email or message me you ( Read more... )

Even though I personally do write Wincest, I made a specific choice not to offer it at Sweet Charity (which I think I've participated in three times so far) because of the involvement of RAINN, which is an amazing charity. I write other types of fic, so I decided it was NOT more important to me to offer Wincest than it was to support the cause. Even as a writer of Wincest, it made me a little uncomfortable to see those fics offered for this particular charity auction because those fics get posted, people outside fandom could find them, ETC. and I would hate for RAINN to think those of us writing for them don't take the REAL issue of incest seriously.

All that being said, I am definitely signing up again this year - and will once again offer J2 or SPN gen fic. :)

It occurs to me now that both goodies I provided for the last RAINN auction turned out to be non- or dub-con, and one involved 'cest. And, as Lithy pointed out in the pros above, these goodies made real money that helped real people. However, I believe I didn't specifically state in my offering that these things were okay. I made a blanket statement about the types of things I write, and linked to my fic master list. Many people who were bidding on me were already familiar with my work ( ... )

Okay wow, I do feel strangely odd, and slightly conflicted. Maybe it’s not having enough sleep or coffee yet to feel this way after reading this first thing in the morning, but again wow ( ... )

Not wanting to veer into censorship is very much why I've not gotten into this and other issues before - it is such a slippery slope and there are so many variations on what people think is appropriate and what isn't, it's impossible to please everyone. I'm a "don't agree with what you say, defend to the death your right to say it" kind of girl, so I've always figured going with the option that's censor-free and donation generating is the best way to go.

Kinks and RPS aren't even on the table, they're not even perceptually contrary to RAINN's mandate so they're going nowhere :)

It's just I'd be a little remiss as an admin not to open the floor on the issue while we're kicking off again, just to see where we all are and if there are options and compromises I hadn't considered (wow, so very likely).

Thank you so much for giving your point of view, it's incredibly appreciated :) It's not a storm! A light rain at best *g*

Sorry, but right now I'm feeling less hopeful & frankly hurt/angry by people's reactions, the way it’s coming across to me- even by those that meant well.

So I'm going to walk away for now go something else, clear my head - hopefully come back more optimistic.

Btw, last note- whether people like SPN or Wincest (& I realize SPN was used mainly as an example), the slash/wincest it’s not just a fandom thing it was brought up on the show through Chuck's books. The characters discovered on-line slash and though they didn't say the word Wincest, it was blatantly clear.

Dean: There's Sam Girls and Dean Girls and...What's a slash fan?
Sam: As in Sam slash Dean together.
Dean: Like together, together? They do know we are brothers right?
Sam: Doesn't seem to matter.
Dean: Well that's just sick!

I neither write nor read the disputed genres, so I'm not directly affected, but I've always found it strangely ironic to see non-con listed on a site affiliated with RAINN. As for dub-con, I've always thought that tag applied to situations where consent wasn't clear to the reader for whatever reason, and how would a writer know that would be the case before at least outlining the fic? Perhaps I'm wrong on that point ( ... )

*g* I have also said many words without an answer, I sympathise.

But the labelling may be a plan! The idea is to try and be more, not less, inclusive and I worry that changing anything at all will actually upset the balance. But by not bring it up, it turns into this elephant and that's not going to work either.

Maaan.

I'm not sure about the impact it would have on the total. In an ideal world, the two would trade off, but realistically I suspect the total take would fall.

I'm wondering whether having it so all things are okay, except non-con? Because as someone has pointed out, there's loving examples of incest relationships (and it's also not universally illegal/considered taboo and I'm never happy imposing one culture's take on things and making it so) and dub-con is more of a kink ...

But you do still get the fine detail of when is non-con art, as it were.

Worms, can of.
