1. Choose five of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is one of your five all time favorites?

I hestitated the most in adding that one, because I think it's more an of the moment admiration than an all-time top. (But I do realize, yes, that the instructions said that.)
I don't actually find the the overall story to be amazing, nor am I entirely endeared to Oskar's character. I do think, however, that the parts written from the perspective of the grandmother and grandfather are wonderful.

What did you think of it? As a whole, I enjoyed Everything is Illuminated more.

I did too. I actually just finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close yesterday on the back porch in the sun. And... I have to say, the first 40 pages, I was in love. There's something about tapping into some kind of collective national conscience that I guess gets to me.

But overall, it was just... too clever. And too right now. I had to drag up from my brain why the name Mohammed Atta sounded familiar. And there was a part I had to translate using the T9 text messaging on my cell phone.

I mean, I do like it. It's no Everything is Illuminated, and I'm trying to figure out why.

It also makes me wonder where the female writers of Jonathan Safran Foer's generation are hiding out...

I adore Dylan Thomas, and Under Milkwood in particular. It makes my stomach hurt.

3 is The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. That book literally hurt to read, but it was amazing.

I agree, on both points.

Yeah, with a less-related username, I'm shameless enough to say Autobiography of Red. Ahem. Thankya.
