Here's the trick to teaching the first day of Hamlet. Tell the kids they're going to memorize the opening speech of Hamlet, it'll freak em out. Then they'll look at the script and realize it's "Who's there?" And Keeks, it's a play, get em on their feet. The first scene is fantastic, it's a darkness scene. Shakespeare wrote that play to be performed at two in the afternoon in an open theatre. Broad daylight! And the first scene gives a dozen clues that not only is it so dark you can't see someone standing right next to you, it's also frickin COLD. But then, and this is the great thing, these two guys who can't see their hands in front of their faces describe IN DETAIL a ghost. See what old Will did there? He created the world's first ghostly special effect, namely, an illuminated ghost. And you'd be amazed how long it takes most classes to notice that.

sidenote: sorry. this is kind of what i do now. good luck!!
