The nature of online communication constantly changes. Earliest theories of the power of the internet in facilitating a social network tended to see the internet as an extension of existing telecommunications networks, and of television. Television as a model for internet communication has some relevance today - particularly in the domain of heavily trafficked web pages - but for the most part, the internet has outstripped the communicative potential of television for the simple reason of its interactivity. Analogies can no longer be made between the internet and televisual communication, or the internet and telephone communication. This has prompted an analysis of the internet that is somehow analogous to the world around us. In some way, conceptualising the online world in spatial terms is simple, and even when the functional technology powering the internet was still basic, the term “cyberspace” was relevant in public imagination.
