Thanksgiving is around the corner. Wonderful-wonderful holiday! What would make it even more wonderful, if by 10 pm I don't get too many phone calls about blood suagrs in 500s. So, let's look at our dinner plans ( Read more... )

I just have to ask- I never saw an intro post, are you diabetic yourself or just a medical professional work with diabetics? Just curious.

PS: I don't see why anyone would end up 500 after just a meal, unless they forgot to take their insulin all together or had a pump failure or something. The last time I was 500 (pump failure ftw) I didn't even bother calling my endo, because its always the same advice- take x number of units by injection, call me if it doesn't resolve itself in several hours. ;)

I am an endo and not a diabetic myself. You can see more about me in my profile. Had a personal blog for awhile but recently started a professional blog to keep my patients engaged, and also in order to glean some insight into patient's perspective on things. Plus, there is so much misinformation about diabetes in the Internet, including LJ communities, that I hoped to become a resource for those who are looking for info.

Pump is a wonderful thing; however, I am still seeing patients in DKA almost weekly, not always due to pump failure.

Ah okay, thanks. I've actually found most of the LJ communities on here to be pretty informed, but I'm only a member of 3. (Well, four but the other one is kind of not so much a factual diabetes community but a giant bitch session ;)).

Yeah, that's a problem with the pump for sure- some people think they don't need to check as often and then they don't realize there's a problem with it. I've found the best way tot try and avoid that is to check just as often, more if you've had a high, and to make sure you
change your site and tubing as often as you're supposed to, which a lot of people don't do and then kinks and blockages occur.

Anyway, welcome to the community!
