I have mixed feelings on Christmas... I like shopping for gifts for people, and I ain't gonna lie - I like getting presents too... but why do we have to put a tree in our living room? I know there are deep traditions and it comes from something that made sense to someone at some point... but now? Drive to the home depot lot, pick up a tree and stick it a corner for two weeks? I don't get it.

Gifts --- I get that.

Trees? I don't understand.

Bruce was desperate to get a tree this year because he didn't want christmas gifts to pile up on the dining table - so now we have a tree so that there is a place to put presents.

I also get gingerbread and peppermint fudge. I don't get egg nog.

My tree experience is different from most peoples I think. Since I'm part of a giant hippy family, the idea of killing a tree, leaving the massive fire danger in our house for three weeks, and then throwing it away never really worked for us. We would go pick up a live tree from the nursery in a giant pot. We'd usually keep it in the pot on the deck and use it for two or three Christmas's. Then we'd plant it outside. There's a huge row of them on my parents' property. We also have a tradition of stringing popcorn and cranberries for the tree. All four of us generally sit in the living room with needle and thread creating these long strings. And eating some pieces along the way of course. The shear number of ornaments that we don't use is quite terrifying, mostly gifts from my mom's old students ( ... )

I pretty much share your sentiments. For me Xmas is about sharing fellowship with family and friends but I despise the commercialism about it. galtine1 and I were disagreeing arguing about it once after I said Xmas gifts were supposed to be personal and hand-made. We finally sulked in silence for a while then on the radio (KPBS) someone started talking about what the holiday is supposed to be about and, lo, he repeated what I said. Unfortunately galtine1 grew up with the commercial aspect so we have a hard time during this season.
