I read somewhere, maybe an article in Wired, that many major scientific advances were made in what were originally thought to be "failed" experiments. By re-examining the data, successes were found in unintended areas. I think it's always important to remember that "success" and "failure" are not absolutes, but elements in a spectrum; and that some of the greatest successes of life can spring out of what we at first view as failure, but are in reality just a nudge of redirection.
