FIC: The Wandering Kind (SPN, Sam/Dean)(complete)
So, as it turns out, hopping off to Istanbul for five weeks kind of puts a crimp in the editing process! Hi, deadline, nice to meet you, how kind of you to drop by so unexpectedly! But, here it is at long last: my spn_j2_bigbang fic! Fanfare! Confetti!
First of all, many thanks to my artist, guard_the_cards, who created some cool illustrations for my fic. Her art can be found here and in the text itself. Secondly, thanks to renenet for providing invaluable plot help on an early draft... this fic would have royally sucked if not for you! And third, but not last-- well, yes, last-- the title and chapter headings are taken from a song of the same name by Laura Veirs. You should download "Wandering Kind" and then go buy a CD, because she's awesome.
And now, the fic. Oh! One last thing after all. The concept was born of a long-ago prompt from spn_fairytales, (to write a story based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Traveling Companion), but mutated greatly when I decided to develop it into my Big Bang fic instead, and so any resemblance is, at this point, intentional but fairly incidental.

Sam/Dean. AU (breaks from canon before pilot). Roughly 25,000 words. Warnings for language and explicit content. (Call it NC-17 or your local equivalent.)

John Winchester dies on a sunny day, and a grief-stricken Dean, his last surviving son, faces the prospect of traveling the roads -- and life -- alone. But luck changes; desperate for company, Dean meets mysterious hitchhiker Sam Harvelle and agrees to give him a ride to California. Their twisting route takes them from backwater record stores to living puppet shows, mildewed motel rooms to demonic suburban homes, and as the two men struggle with their growing attraction, they find that secrets abound and signs and portents lie hidden around every corner. Only one thing is for certain: Dean Winchester trusts Sam Harvelle with his life. But he has no idea why. Warnings for abuse of fairytales and a case of accidental incest.
