Shooting from the Hip, Alicia/Kalinda, Owen, PG, 1/2damelolaFebruary 17 2012, 23:44:29 UTC
Owen gestures to the bartender for another round of shots. The lime wedges balanced on the rims of the elegant glasses are thick and juicy, shining under the bar's soft lighting. It's the kind of bar that likes to look classy up front to misdirect from what might be going on in the darker corners, and Owen's always been a sucker for a joint like that. He suspects that--somehow--his drinking buddy already knew that about him

"What?" Kalinda tries for indifferent, but there's no mistaking the hitch in her breath or the crack in her voice. "I don't know--"
"I know," Owen interrupts. "I've been watching people make puppy dog eyes at Alicia the Oblivious for pretty much her whole life. And you've got it as bad as any of them, Ms Sharma."
"I should go," Kalinda starts the sentence, but her body doesn't want to cooperate. Owen sees the way that her back gets just a little more rounded, how her shoulders slump in relief. He's been having these conversations since he was thirteen, and he knows the posture of the unburdened as well as anyone.
"It might help, to talk," he suggests. "I mean, I can't help you with how straight my dear sister is. Nobody can--"
And there it is, the flicker of something that he least expected. Guilt? Shame? No, something more like happiness, and it transforms Kalinda's guarded face for the split second that it hovers

I LOVE this! Thanks for writing this prompt and doing it so wonderfully. It was just as great a scene as I had imagined it would be. Now, if only it were possible to hear what Owen has to say to Alicia! :-)

LOLA. YOU'RE A QUEEN. I'M SMILING MY BIG STUPID SHIPPER SMILE RIGHT NOW.
I love Owen, and I love YOUR Owen. Smart, nosy, sly-but-not-quite-sly-enough. And Kalinda! In all her skittish glory! She's trying to get to know Alicia's family! And is starting easy with the ones she can *drink* with! (And I am WAY overusing exclamation points but I BLAME YOU!!)
In any case, I adore the premise of this, and wish desperately I could slide right into this story and see Owen's convo with Alicia because it could only be epic. Brilliant, my dear! Thanks so much for this!

Yay! There's a distinct lack of Owen & Kalinda, so *huggles you & gives you cookies*
The atmosphere was spot on. *pets Kalinda, yeah, no way would making friends with Grace or Zack a good idea...* Who wouldn't want to be friends with Owen, anyways? Thanks for sharing!

Owen + Kalinda = EPIC AWESOMENESS.
This is amaaaaaaazing. I love how Owen just KNOWS, and how he's totally not fooled by Kalinda's denial attempts.
And there it is, the flicker of something that he least expected. Guilt? Shame? No, something more like happiness, and it transforms Kalinda's guarded face for the split second that it hovers.
"Something happened between you two?" *flails more than Owen did* This bit? LOVE IT.

I need more Owen in my life. This line: "I've been watching people make puppy dog eyes at Alicia the Oblivious for pretty much her whole life. And you've got it as bad as any of them, Ms Sharma." Love this line, it's just like Alicia to be oblivious of anyone being interested in her.

I can only imagine the conversation tequila-hazed Owen will have with his newly enlightened sister. This is such a fabulous story. And Kalinda was perfect- never really saying much but there was so much there!
"You're making some kind of gesture."
"I'm having a drink. Or three," Kalinda says, and this time she's out of her chair and into her jacket before Owen can react any further. "So thanks. For the drinks."
In other words, yes. Guuh, I love that Kalinda is making a gesture for Alicia. It makes me happy.
