Character Background: When he was 12, four years before the usual unveiling, Aang was taken aside by the monks and told he was the Avatar, the manifestation of the spirit of the world, capable of unbelievable power and the ability to bend the four elements of the world in harmony. He was told four years before custom in order to gain a leg up on his training, for the monks had seen the signs of unrest in the world, particularly from the Fire Nation. He was already a potent Airbender, able to bed his natural element twice as well at half the age of other masters. He had his Master's arrows at the youngest age ever recorded, having mastered 35 of 36 tiers and created a new bending move. The other children of the monastery refused to play with him after he was shown as Avatar, and he entered a very lonely existence. Monk Gyatso, his keeper, was his only friend, but the monks saw him as an attachment for the Avatar and therefore a liability. The day the monks told him he was to leave Gyatso and move to a completely different monastery was the day he ran away. He, riding on his flying bison, was caught in a storm, plummeting into the ocean. His Avatar state activated just in time to seal him in ice and keep him alive.

...For a hundred years.

The Fire Nation totally destroyed the Air Nomads, killing everyone in an attempt to destroy the Avatar before taking over the world. They took over Earth Kingdom lands, all but the great cities, and set up colonies. They stole hundreds of Waterbenders from the Southern Water Tribe and imprisoned them. They threw the entire world out of balance, killed hundreds of people and destroyed countless forests.

And then Katara and Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe found Aang, still encased in the ice ball, still 12 years old - and still the Avatar, unbeknownst to them. They took him to their village, but opening the ball he was encased in had sent a powerful light powered by his Avatar state into the air, and Fire Nation ships were soon upon them. Prince Zuko, the banished son of the Fire Lord, took Aang captive in an attempt to win back his honour, but Aang escaped, thanks to Katara and Sokka.

Together they traveled to the Southern Air Temple, where Aang had been raised. There, he learned of the end of the Air Nomads. The loss he felt was so deep, his Avatar state was triggered, signaling his return throughout the world. Katara calmed him, but the damage had already been done: the Avatar was alive, and the entire world now knew it.

The three decided to go to the Northern Water Tribe, a great and still powerful hub of Waterbenders, so that Aang would be able to learn the first of the four elements needed to destroy the Fire Lord. On their way, Aang crossed to the Spirit world, where the Avatar before him, Avatar Roku, asked him to meet on the Winter's Solstice on Crescent Island - at a temple in the Fire Nation. The perilous journey left Aang with an important message: Sozin's Comet, the very comet that started the war, giving Firebenders incredible amounts of power, was coming back in one year. He had to master the four elements in that time - a feat that generally took years, even for the Avatar - and stop the Fire Lord from destroying the rest of the world.

After a very difficult journey - spearheaded by attempts by General Zhao and Prince Zuko to capture him - Aang and his friends made it to the North Pole. They met with Master Pakku, who refused to teach Katara Waterbending on account of her being female. She fought him, losing - but she stood up for what she believed in, and he relented, teaching she and Aang Waterbending. They weren't there for very long before the Fire Nation found them, bringing a great siege upon the Northern Water Tribe. General Zhao - now an Admiral - infiltrated the city and found the physical forms of the Moon and Sea spirits. He killed the Moon spirit, darkening the entire sky and destroying the Waterbender's ability to use their craft. The Sea spirit, in anger, used Aang as a vessel, destroying the soldiers and fixing the city. It blasted the Firebenders from the North Pole in a rage, killing Zhao for his destruction of the mate of the Sea.

But it turned out the Princess of the Tribe had been blessed by the Moon spirit, and by giving her life willingly, she became the Moon spirit, restoring the balance that was lost. The Sea spirit, appeased, returned to its form, and the Avatar was thanked for saving the city.

They then moved to the Earth Kingdom, hopeful to find a Master Earthbender. On the way to Omashu, one of the great Earth cities (where an Earthbending master friend of Aang's ruled), they were drawn into a swamp that showed them each a vision - for Sokka and Katara, it showed them loves lost, but for Aang it showed the very Earthbender he needed. He didn't understand it at the time. They moved on to Omashu to find it had been conquered by the Firebenders, the Earthbending king imprisoned. He told Aang to find someone who listened to the earth before sending them away. "Wait, and watch."

The three of them move on, finding a town with an Earthbending contest. Aang notices a blind girl easily defeating her matches by listening to the earth. He tracks her down, and, at first, she has no interest in helping them. She eventually runs away from home, joining them as Aang's teacher. She helps him overcome his block as an Airbender and start him on his way towards Earthbending.

The four start towards Ba Sing Se, the capitol of the Earth Kingdom. The city had stood against sieges before, some from even the strongest Firebenders in its vast history during the war. They reason gaining it as help would greatly strengthen their chances. The city, they find, is ruled by a daft king who has been carefully kept from the information of the war. They uncover a vast conspiracy and break the news to the king, evidence and all - but it's too late. Azula, Zuko's evil sister and Princess of the Fire Nation, has infiltrated, taking Katara and Zuko captive as Aang and Sokka are out.

Aang is with a man in the Eastern Temple, learning to control his chakras' powers and unlock the Avatar state when he senses Katara in danger. He abandons his training and pulls Sokka from the Water Tribe navy early, going back to Ba Sing Se. They break in, illiciting a fight from Azula, who asks Zuko to help her. After an internal battle, he accepts. Aang clears his chakras in time to enter a controllable Avatar state, but right as he enters it, Azula blasts him in the back. It almost kills him, but Katara saves him just in time as they escape.

Aang's out for weeks. He awakes on a Fire Nation ship, confused. They'd been able to rejoin the Water Tribesmen and capture a ship, and had been sailing for weeks evading capture. They make a plan to attack on the Day of the Black Sun, the day of a solar eclipse, when all Firebending will be useless. When the day comes, the invasion goes well - but the Fire Lord saw it coming. He escapes.

Zuko joins them, this time as a teacher. Together he and Aang overcome their differences and learn an ancient Firebending form known as the Dancing Dragon. As he learned, he realized he wouldn't be able to take the Fire Lord's life. It was against his very being to take the Fire Lord's life, no matter how important it was for the rest of the world.

He consults his past lives, and they tell him he needs to restore the balance. Desperately he tries to find another way, and a giant lion-turtle finds him and gives him the ability to Energybend. As Sozin's comet flies over the world, Ozai and Aang fight. As they do, Aang is thrown against a rock that opens the chakra Azula's lightning scar had blocked. He takes the Avatar form, defeating Ozai - but stops before the past lives kill Ozai in anger. He uses his new ability to take the Fire Lord's ability to Firebend, leaving him in a constantly weak state.

The war is ended, Zuko becomes Fire Lord and Aang finds himself at the edge of a world that needs serious healing. He accepts himself as Avatar and his duties, and prepares for the coming years.

Abilites/Special Powers: Aang, being the Avatar of his world, has the ability to bend all four elements: Water, Fire, Air and Earth. He's adept at all four, though he generally prefers Airbending in every-day life. While he needs the other three present to bend, he can create fire. He also has the ability to Energybend, though he has not used it since ending the war - and refuses to.

He also has the ability to become extremely powerful at will upon entering the Avatar state, but as it is a defense mechanism, he tends to explore all other options before relying on it.

Third-Person Sample:
Breathe in.

Breathe out.

He centers his energy, takes his position and begins the circle, a basic Airbending stance. He walks in the circle, three times evenly, before beginning the breath of his energy into Air. It swirls around him, just as evenly, and he feels at home again, the air currents flowing through in his circle, out and around him, totally under his control.

For a moment, he thinks about Gyatso. He wonders how many soldiers he took down before-

No. Stop. Breathe.

The air strengthens under his emotions, and he feels himself losing control. His breathing is harder, and his stance has loosened. Control is of utmost importance throughout this exercise, and he's getting sloppy. Carefully he eases up, loosening his control and making the stream of air much smaller. Carefully he shifts his stance and goes from air to water, shifting seamlessly into a basic Waterbending stance. Carefully he adds in a stream of water from the jars nearby, returning back to that mental calm state he relies on.

He goes through the motions, shifting his weight easily and fluidly, as if he himself were water. He remembers the shifting tides of the North Pole, the men drowning in the water under his con-

No! Stop. STOP. B r e a t h e.

The water goes rigid for a second, surrounded by the now terse air, and glistens as if it is freezing. He growls slightly under his breath and shifts his stance again, becoming more balanced. So, so carefully, he controls it. He shifts his way through the stances again, dropping air and controlling the water instead. It shifts and flows, sinks and floats, and he feels that calm again, just for a moment. The beautiful ring of blue water around him is brilliant in the slight light, and it flashes like fire for a moment, fire in a ring around him, burning Kata-

"No. No!" His breathing is ragged and his stance goes from water to air accidentally, an automatic reaction to the sudden shift in emotion. He drops the water, growling. It splashes around his bare feet and he stalks forward, through the bushes and towards the camp. Katara looks at him concernedly.

"You okay, Aang?"

He pauses, and looks at her. She smiles, worried. He smiles back, nodding. "Yeah! Just practicing."
