I didn't know they had automats in America! I don't think we called them that in the Netherlands, where they still exist, they were just called FEBOs. Great place to get comfort food, although the ones i remember weren't sit-down places, you just get all your snacks out the various doors and eat them on the curb or a park bench or something.
I don't know how many other automats there were besides the Horn and Hardart restaurants, which were mainly in Philadelphia and NYC. They disappeared in the 1980s because fast food took over the automat business. I think someone tried to revive them in the early 2000s, but they didn't last.
My mom told me later that she was always confused as to why we always chose to go to the "automat" when she gave us the option to go to any restaurant we wanted. But it was more about putting coins in the slot than the food! These were luncheonette-style, not fancy sit-down places.
I remember watching this news report online about a few automat-style eateries in some airports that started during the pandemic that aren't sit-down places.
I can barely remember the book and the storyline. I only remember my reaction to it. I don't think it was the storyline, per se, but how I related to a few characters and their pain. I may read the book again and suspect that my feelings are less strong now.
The mini-series was superb. Most times, movies that are based on books are inferior, but a mini-series can do a book justice because it doesn't have to condense the storyline in 90 minutes!
I wondered if you'd read the book because the characters were from Australia. I don't think the storyline gripped me, but the characterization. I related to the pain a few of the characters had.

I miss fortysomething, and remember Angela pasticcio who ran it. I miss her, too as she's not been around in a couple of years.

I can only vaguely remember "The Thorn Birds". I know I loved the series back then, the book ... not so much.

I read The Thorn Birds around the time it first came out, but it didn't make any lasting impression on me.
