Wait, so now he's actually joining Avenged Sevenfold? Last I heard, it was just that he quit DT.
Mostly, I think Portnoy is being a drama queen. I don't think it's all that likely that the other guys in the band wouldn't want to take a break to hang out with their families. They've all got their own side projects, too.
I have no idea. It's just... how is it Dream Theater without him? It isn't. At first I thought it was for the money, and I thought hey at least A7X is the closest thing to DT in mainstream music now... but who knows anymore. It just makes me so sad. When I saw the news it was like reading an obituary.
Had this happened five years ago, I'd have had the same reaction to the news that you're having right now. In a way, they really aren't Dream Theater without Portnoy. But the past few albums they've made since Train of Thought have been so much Portnoy's creations - with the exception of one or two LaBrie songs and a Petrucci song thrown in - that it was less Dream Theater and more The Mike Portnoy Band. That's just how it's felt to me. Who's to say that Dream Theater won't sound fine with a new drummer? And who's to say that Mike Portnoy isn't going to be back within a few years? I wouldn't be surprised if Dream Theater puts out a new album and I end up liking it a hell of a lot better than, say, Black Clouds and Silver Linings.
It is pretty sad, though, that he's willing to walk away from a 25-year legacy for a band that has so little reach and influence outside of their niche.
Ah, see... I actually haven't listened to the past two or three DT albums. As far as their music goes, I am still stuck in a time warp where everything is five years ago. I think I subconsciously chose not to get any new DT albums after my split with N. I should change that. I want to hear this Mike Portnoy Band. LOL :)
