Embarrassing consumer rage

Nov 28, 2010 05:32

I never wanted to be the person yelling at someone behind a counter.  EVER.  Having worked retail myself, as well as in other misc. customer service/ food service capacities, I understood what it was like to be the target of someone's impotent rage.  Yeah, it does quite suck that you can't go to a store, pick something you like, and take it home ( Read more... )

I'm the sort who will rather pay extra money than fight for it, too. And I'm also guilty of the "but they showed me the dirty filter" bit. I mean, it does look horrifically gross right? But I've found that buying the filter myself and putting it in (or having a handy friend put it in, who am I kidding) is a lot cheaper.

I don't think you need to feel embarrassed about how you acted. Rhino has a major attitude problem and it needs some serious adjustment. Falsies probably knows this, having to work with the jackass, and doesn't blame you.

Yeah it always looks disgusting... I told Justin he needs to go get the oil changed himself. LOL

Thanks for the support. I do feel sorry for Falsies... I'm sure in a couple weeks, Rhino's going to turn her into the dead-eyed drone that she's turned her other minions into...

Okay, speaking as someone who currently works in service and as someone who vividly recalls working in retail, let me just say that THAT was bullshit. Rhino should have corporate called on her. And I'm not saying this in the 'I'm your friend' vein and here's why: Service = Ass Kissing. (I hate that it's true, but that's it ( ... )

That anecdote, with the two guys ignoring customers for the foxy chick, that happened ALL THE DAMN TIME when I worked at Electronic Express (in varying numbers of sales associates). I used to lecture my coworkers on it, much to their annoyance. It's not only horrendously insulting to the rest of the customers, but it can be kind of humiliating for the "foxy chick" as well if she notices. I think it's one of those things that will inevitably happen in a heternormative, nearly all-male sales environment - sooner or later, the sight of a good-looking woman will turn even the smartest guy into a total skeazix.

Yeah, it doesn't really hurt that I wasn't enough of a fox to get their/his undivided attention, it was the fact that I was dropped like a turd when one actually walked in.

Even if it doesn't really hurt, it still bears saying that you are totally more than enough of a fox. Those guys were just shallow creeps.

Soo I still work in retail and if something is priced wrong we have to give it to them for FREEEEEE! so we make damn sure our prices aren't wrong, if the coat was on the wrong rack, then whatever but if there were other ones there then they should have shut up, gave it to you for 40 bucks and then moved the other coats to a different rack. Don't worry I would have put up a stink and then not bought the coat out of principle even though 60 bucks is still cheap, i think working in retail makes things like this worse cuz we know how we would have had to handle the situation and when you don't get the same courtesy as you had to give other bitchy customers its maddening.

I was hoping a retail person would reply to this.

Thank you. I know, that's typically what happens, which is why I didn't think it would be so horribly complicated to just get my coat for the advertised price. There have been so many times in my life where I had to explain to customers that I couldn't get them their discount, and then the store manager or supervisor would come and be hero of the fucking day and just give them free stuff and make me look like the bad guy for trying to do my job. Ugh.

I normally would have not bought the coat out of principle... but it really was that nice of a coat (and a rare find, as I'm a plus-sized gal) that I was like, whatever and walked with it.

Look up the laws in your state...even in Michigan, which is arguably one of the more anti-consumer states, there's a "Scanner Law" that says that if something scans at the wrong price based on either its tag OR its signage, you are entitled to not only your money back, but ALSO a small amount extra based on the price of the item and the amount you were overcharged. (My sweet, never-rude mother-in-law used to deliberately shop at stores that tried to screw people, and walk out with $25-$50 cash in hand every time ( ... )

Thank you so much for the info! Justin and I are so sick of lying down and taking their shit. Especially since so much of the landscape around us is all shopping malls and corporate warehouses. If they're going to suck the life and individuality out of our towns, how fucking dare they slip up even one bit when it comes to making their customers happy? (I mean, within reason..)

Maybe it's not so much of a bad thing that your husband isn't afraid of being an asshole. There have been times where either Justin or I have thought, after being screwed over, man we should have stood up for ourselves more. Esprit d'escalier.

Yup, I agree completely! Those places owe so much to the communities they're in that spreading even a little dischord -- or trampling even a few individual rights -- is just flat unacceptable. Thank you!
