I've just spent the last half hour reading the journals I posted a link to in my last post. It's so upsetting. If you scroll down there's a transcript of a conversation interdictor had with a police officer who was seeking shelter in his building. I'm at a loss for words. How could things get to this state ( Read more... )

Not today, but parts of Bavaria are pretty flood weary. Luckily, Germany didn't cut its natural disaster rescue budget to finance the war in Iraq.

I was referring to the total breakdown of society, not the flooding specifically.

It is truly awful - it sounds like it is just a crazy, anarchist war zone there. Truly truly awful.

Here's a quote from Yahoo news that sheds a little light on things:

"Hospitals are trying to evacuate," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center. "At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, `You better come get my family.'"

So, people are trying to use guns to get their children rescued. I can't imagine a parent that wouldn't resort to that if they had to/could.

Do you really think that, they have to use guns? I can't imagine that shooting at people is helping anything. I also read that the helicopters are then just too afraid and not even touching down. I think it is insane to terrorize the people that are trying to help you. It makes me think of trying to deal with a rabid enraged animal - totally lacking in reason.

A kid is pretty close to death after 5 days without food. I can't imagine being sane if I were watching Brian die.

This is certainly true, but I also can't imagine you toting a machine gun and hurting other people because of it. What I really don't understand is how things devolved so quickly into total anarchy in the downtown area. There were reports of armed gangs, rape, and murder right away. I just don't understand how this could be alllowed to happen, like you said in another post: why tell everyone to leave the city after all the avenues of escape have been cut off? Why leave thousands of people to their fate?
