If everyone believed that their life had no meaning and stopped going about life, what would become of the world? Everyone and anyone can make a difference, even if it is small.

you view things in too small an amount of time...even without the human race the universe would still be here...our total impact on everything as a race in total impacts nothing...much less an individual 100 thousand years from now none of this will have ever mattered.

We're making an impact on the environment around us aren't we? If the human race wasn't around the water supply probably wouldn't be dropping so much and the air wouldn't be any where near as poluted, that's going to be major in the future, even if it is 100 thousand years from now.
Thus, we have religion. Man realized there was no purpose to life, so he made one up: religion. Your new purpose is to get to heaven. Really, there is no afterlife, no soul, no spirit. When you die, the molecules of your body decompose, and return to the earth. It's sad to think about, but true. People think that just ebcause we can hold thought that we must have some sort of hidden "something" that keeps us together, gives us the spark of life. We have no purpose. Here, or anywhere else. We are a bane to the environment, if anything, and the universe will continue to exist long after our solar system has been obliterated by the sun's eventual expansion, and consumption of the planets, which will be long after any life at all exists on this miserable planet, due to pollution and whatnot. I could go on and on and on, believe me, I've already made up another page to this, but I won't type it here, and you'll have to ask me to hear it. But just know that we have no purpose, and no significant impact. If we ever do spread into space and

No Purpose?sklightningJanuary 17 2005, 18:50:10 UTC
I think that we all have a purpose but no long term effect. Like jay said, in 100 thousand years, nothing we did will matter. Maybe it will effect the earth, but then in 100 trillion years (or some other huge number) the sun will explode and incinerate the earth. Now maybe there will still be a mark, some aliens might come along a thousand years after that and take in some of the polluted oxygen and fall down dead. We don't know, but the never dieing want for us to leave a mark and have a purpose is part of human nature. Its part of out mental anatomy

we are not looking at the short term we were analyzing the long term...although you have the apearance of a purpose in your life, it will have no effect on the grand outcome.
i agree...there is no purpose religion was created only to create the illusion of purpose, and to hide the fear of death or lessen it. we have no impact except on eachother, nothing we do will be relevant to teh outcome of evertying in the future...we will all die eventualy its how it works...you can not stop that
wow ben, you guys kinda just go from day to day dont you? Ayn Rand is smart, but she over analyzed the world because she hated oppression (any one would), but instead of reflecting on the freedom of humanity she went overboard and attacked the bond that keeps humanity from dissolving, whether that bond be religion, politics or just the friendship of a classroom
If the purpose of religion was to lessen the fear of death, why would the major religion of the world tell people about Hell, where there is a consuming lake of fire, where there is no water and you can't feel anything except the perpetual pain of the flames on your body? I wouldn't think that'd lessen anyone's fear of death, would you?
Don't you know?! That's the ever-amazingly "hilarious" Ross. The one from geometry/trig. OH and BTW, I think I shall look up this Richard Dawkinds guy, sounds interesting. And gimme mah Beck cd back, bitch!
