...even if the furs that were in 508 are not insured, as the fire started in 506 they might be liable.

If it was actually caused by a short in the electrical meter, the local utility company would in that case be reasonably claimable as responsible, following chain-of-authority and the deep-pockets theory of lawsuits for civil (not criminal) charges.

Insurance companies just simplify matters, lack of insurance doesn't mean you're up shit creek. Just that you have to do and arrange all the paddling and oars and boat yourself instead of having one at hand.

Liability claims can be done, BUT they are very, very expensive compared to what would ever be gained from winning the case.

Unless the local area is particularly odd, with something like this it would not be hard at all to get representation on contingency (I think 33% is customary in my area, but that might be steep and YMMV). If the meter frotzed it's on the utility, if the wiring frotzed it's on the homeowner, and in the latter - if the homeowner was insured there's a reasonable chance of recovery up to the property-damage coverage on the insurance ( ... )

1) I hope they have insurance
2) They need to get back in there as soon as possible because if they don't looters will. If anything at all survived...

btw I'm an lj-acquaintance of akirashima, but am unemployed and 2000 miles away, so can't really offer anything of practical value. Just well-wishes. Just so you know who this stranger is, butting in.
