Paris is a strange old place. The best way we could find to describe it is that we both liked everything IN Paris very much, but Paris itself felt very unfriendly overall. It's probably very arrogant to expect things to be in English, but when you have place like the Louvre you did feel like it wouldn't have hurt them too much to post an English

Can't see anything -- is this one of these "works only in IE" things? I use Firefox because IE is poo.

Actually, nope, doesn't work in IE either -- loads little red x's -- but i don't even get those with Firefox.

Anyway -- re: the French-only signs at the Louvre... are the signs at the British Museum multi-lingual? Or does everyone just assume people speak/read at least /some/ English?

It's been a while since I went to a UK museum but I seem to remember tham having some multi-lingual signs yeah. It's tricky - I don't automatically expect everyone to be able to speak English, not by any stretch, but if you're going to pick an "international" language to make signs readable then English is probably the best choice available.

I know -- i asked mostly because i just don't remember from last time i was at the British Museum... er, 20 years ago? My sister had a similar reaction in Austria a few years back -- everything was in German only.

I seem to recall seeing signs in all manner of languages at English museums/tourist attractions... but well, the French will be French...
