I do agree with you. The following is a bit of devil's advocacy -- because I do think that it is impossible to dismiss "UFO" claims altogether. That is, conspiracy theorists are almost certainly wrong; that doesn't make us skeptics necessarily right ( ... )

Neat way of looking at it! swimmer963 May 12 2010, 21:56:01 UTC
Haha I had not looked at it that way. True, entirely true. Still... Aliens in a position to watch us would have had to be around for a huge length of time, and travel a very long way through space to get to us. For that kind of long-term planning, I feel like a species would need to figure out the psychological kinks and "stupidity" in order for it to work at all. Maybe not though... It's incredible how much humans have accomplished still being as disorganized and messy as we are.

Oh, also, in regard to your major: nursing is an interesting choice for someone so philosophically minded. (Not a counter-intuitive choice necessarily, but now I'm curious.) Why nursing, if I may ask?

I've always been interested in science and medicine. Both my parents are science PhDs (biology and physical chemistry respectively) and neither of them works in their specialty area. I guess that kind of pushed me to choose a "useful" major. Nursing is a pretty versatile profession and once I'm qualified, I'll be able to do a variety of work. It's not as many years of commitment as medical school and not as obsessive, so I hope I'll be able to continue writing and maybe stay in school part time to take some of the classes I didn't have time for. (I'm hoping to take computer programming as an elective in the fall, but since I know it'll be a killer for me, I'm debating the wisdom of having my electives be harder than my required courses...)
