A long time ago in a land far away
lived the pineapple princess, Tiki.

Ryan could remember all the times when he and Sharpay were still being read stories before bed by their mother. Ryan’s favorite story to this day was “Humuhumunukunukuapua’a” from Hawaii about a Princess who fell in love with a fish, who happened to be a Prince. Kind of like the Frog Prince, but so much more exotic. Ryan grew up wishing he was like Princess Tiki hoping that one day his “sweet prince” would come one day … and of course this lead to an early discovery that he was reeling for the Princes and those Princes were hooked, lined, and sunk. It made him laugh thinking about how silly he must have been when he was younger. His favorite memory prior to discovery was telling his parents before they tucked him into bed that he wanted to find a prince like Tiki in the story, which must have been awkward for them.

Of course upon his new discovery about himself, Sharpay had tried to protect him from every boy that might have hit on him at the mall or on the beach. She barred even friends she didn’t approve of from getting close to Ryan. She suffocated him so much that he immersed himself so much in acting, singing, and dancing with her that nothing else seemed to matter, but when he was alone he couldn’t help but hope that someone would break though her many barriers.

So when Ryan was invited to play baseball with the other wildcats it seemed kind of a surprise. Sharpay had been blowing him off all summer and now he was practically handed an opportunity to make friends on a silver platter … or maybe more like copper, but he wasn’t out to judge anybody … today.

It also came as a surprise was how interested Chad Danforth seemed to be in him. First it was the whole ‘what the hell are you doing here?’ complex until of course Ryan kicked his ass on the baseball diamond. Then it seemed they had always been friends. After Sharpay and Troy had abandoned them, they just seemed to fit together; it felt right.

She was sweet as a peach, in a pineapple way …

All summer, Chad seemed to be full of surprises. From finding out all the stuff they had in common and of course all the stuff they could find themselves disagreeing on to and how by the end of the summer, just seeing Chad smile made him swoon. With Chad things were easy, especially when compared to Sharpay. Once she had finally gotten over herself at the talent show, she seemed to feel a great need to rekindle her connection with Ryan, and while that was a good thing at best, he couldn’t help but think of all the times he’d rather learning basketball from Chad and showing Chad how to dance properly. When last summer he would be eager to spend hours with Sharpay shopping and lounging at Lava Springs, a simpler less high-maintenance summer is something that he needed this time around. Of course when he tried to tell her that leaving him to be with his new friends for a while was the fastest way to get him to forgive her, she completely ignored him. Ryan could only shrug and chalk this up to being his typical sister. He would never tell her that this side of Sharpay was much more preferable than scheming Sharpay.

But so sad that she hardly speaky.

The biggest surprise Chad left him with was when they got back to school. All summer Ryan had enacted a strict hands-off policy when it came to Chad. He definitely liked him, but he hadn’t realized just how much until when Chad was showing him the proper technique of the free-throw and what it took to make the all-important shot.

“No, no, no, no. Evans!” Chad had said across the court behind the kitchens. He strode over to Ryan and said, “Look.” And he wrapped his hands around Ryan’s to show him how to hold the ball and gently pushed him down showing him the proper stance all the while talking in his ear about what he should look for when shooting the ball.

And Ryan had tried, honestly, he had seriously tried to pay attention, but he couldn’t do it. All he could concentrate on was the softness of Chad’s hands and the warmth of his chest on his back and before he knew it, Chad was practically lifting Ryan up at the basketball flew through the air, bounced off the backboard and swished in the net.

Someone from an unknown location whooped. It was Gabriella. She came out the door and said, “You guys look like you’re having fun!”

Chad laughed a little and said, “Yeah,”

Taylor also walked out and said, “A lot of fun …”

All Ryan could do was smile and allow himself to be pulled away by Gabriella to talk about something Troy had told her about basketball. However his ears pricked up when Taylor mentioned his name to Chad.

Still if you listen well, you’ll hear her secret wish …

“What are you doing with Ryan?” She asked Chad in a whisper.

“What do you mean? He sucks at making shots. I’m just showing him what to do.” Chad responded bemused.

“Well you … you don’t have to …”

“Yeah I do, he’s the one who said he wanted to play with us. So ...”

“So?”

“So … what?” Chad was obviously still confused by what Taylor was getting at. Even Ryan, now that he was away knew that Chad was a little too close for comfort … where Taylor-his girlfriend-was concerned.

“I guess you’re just a really good teacher then.” Taylor huffed and left.

Gabriella watched her go and said, “Maybe I should go-” and before she finished her sentence she was off after Taylor.

Ryan turned to Chad, who was just standing in the middle of the court. He didn’t look up at Ryan, just started dribbling the ball.

“Hey man, look … maybe,” Ryan started. Chad looked up at him. He went on, “Maybe … she wanted you to show her how to handle a free-throw.”

Chad scrunched his eyes in confusion. “What?” He asked sounding highly confused.

Ryan shook his head fervently, “Nevermind,” He needed to duck out of this quick. “Look I, uh, promised I’d meet my mom around now for lunch … so uh. I’ll, um, see you later!” Ryan walked away with Chad still holding the ball.

It wasn’t his fault that the whole thing had happened so suddenly. The whole situation was extremely awkward. He felt afraid of his own feelings: afraid that he would be happy if Chad and Taylor broke up.

I long to free a truly remarkable fish

My sweet Prince.

He almost hated that he felt this way. This was no way to act when you get a new friend! Evans’ had tact, they took their time with things. Well, maybe not so much Sharpay … and she made up one-fourth of the family. But it’s not like he was trying to seduce Chad like Sharpay with Troy. He would still hang out with Chad, but with new rules.

Rule #1: Friendship comes first

This was easy to follow. Talking to Chad was easy even when they had their differences. He may have been a little quick to judge, but Ryan was up to the challenge of ironing out his creases to make him see plainly. It got so bad one day they had been playing golf for many hours before Fulton came out and yelled at Chad until he realized that Ryan was there, then he promptly left causing Ryan and Chad to promptly start laughing.

Rule #2: Don’t get too cozy

On a movie night with the Wildcats at Gabriella’s house, he had been talking to Chad up until Taylor had arrived, where he had excused himself to check on his sister who had taken to hanging out in the kitchen. He brushed past Taylor with a smile that she sort of returned after she realized he had been sitting next to Chad.

When Ryan reached the kitchen, he saw his sister in a lip-lock with Zeke … which stunned him for half a second before he practically ran out of the room without them seeing. When he returned Chad had his arm wrapped around Taylor’s shoulders and she had nestled her head on his shoulder as Gabriella popped the movie in her DVD player. Zeke and Sharpay chose that moment to come right back in and shuffled to the seat that Ryan had his sights on.

“Just in time!” Gabriella said sitting next to Troy and pushing some buttons on the remote. Ryan looked frantically for a place to sit feeling stupid for standing around like an idiot next to the television holding his cup of soda and feeling awkward. In the cramped den, Martha and Kelsi had taken the floor. Gabriella and Troy were fanned out over the love seat (of course), Jason was sitting in the only available chair, and Zeke, Sharpay, Taylor and Chad were all chummy on the small couch. The only place to sit was on the arm rest that happened to be next to Chad. He had to take it. He noticed that Taylor looked up at him once, but didn’t look at him again. He had a sneaking suspicion that she might think seduction of basketball players ran in the Evans family.

Rule #3: No touching, except in the event of an extreme injury on the other person

Chad suffered no extreme injuries all summer even if he did fall over his feet trying to tango with Gabriella and might have scrapped his knee, but other than that, that was about it. His pride may have been seriously injured when he fell on the ground, but Ryan’s rules were only geared towards physical anguish. Ryan did have to help him up by the hand though. He had to be the responsible teacher after all.

The only time Ryan couldn’t get out of the way of he and Chad coming into contact was that day at the basketball court. The day where he had simply walked (practically ran) away from Chad, thinking of how great it might be if Chad and Taylor broke up. Ryan really liked Taylor, they had worked together in the plot to get Gabriella and Troy back together at the talent show and he had been impressed with her daring, but he couldn’t help but think that she was onto him. But as far as he was convincing himself there was nothing to be onto about. He wished he hadn’t thought it, but in the moment that Chad had gripped his hands and been so gentle helping him with the ball, he couldn’t blame himself for thinking anything else.

My sweet Prince …

Humuhumunukunukuapua’a

Makihiki malahini-who
Humuhumunukunukuapua`a

“Ryan …” He could hear something. He felt like he was moving. When he opened his eyes he was. He was moving with Chad. He and Taylor had broken up. Chad kept telling him how much he loved him. He was nibbling on Chad’s ear. They were rolling around on someone’s sheets …

Ooh!

“Ryan!” Chad was almost screaming for him at this point. And then he heard music … crying out: Hawana wakawakawakaniki pu pu pu!

“RYAN!” Sharpay almost slammed on her brakes in frustration. Ryan awoke with a jolt. Dammit! He had been dreaming … in Sharpay’s car. He felt like an idiot. Sharpay had put in a CD that they had recorded together and of course that damn song would be playing at a time like this!

“I can’t believe you fell asleep in the car! It’s the first day back, didn’t you sleep last night?” No, Ryan thought but didn’t voice aloud. He had been too nervous for this coming day.

Sharpay kept driving, they were almost at school. “Don’t tell me you have senioritis already!” She whined.

(Ryan, the fog?)

“Sorry sis …” At least the dream hadn’t gone so far as to do … well, that. It hadn’t gotten to that point. That would be unforgivable. He was actually grateful she had interrupted him.

She dreams of a boy who is under a spell
that has left him all wet and scaly.

The best news of the summer, if he could call it good news … was that Chad and Taylor had broken up before school started. He couldn’t help but think that this was good news for him. He hoped Taylor wouldn’t be bitchy towards him; not that he couldn’t handle it, just look at the first sixteen years of his life with Sharpay.

Ryan might have been prepared for any reaction Taylor might have … well, he didn’t care, all he could think about was how happy he would be to see Chad. He had grown so accustomed to seeing him everyday and talking and hanging out with the wildcats on the weekend that when the time their family took their annual end-of-summer trip to their house in the Hamptons in New York, it felt awkward leaving all his new friends behind to deal with Mr. Fulton. Although it was fun shopping with Sharpay for the perfect back-to-school outfit, that was a minor diversion. He found himself extremely excited and nervous to see Chad for the first time in about two weeks.

The school setting frightened him the most. Would they all go back to their cliques? Divide up between jocks, drama geeks, and the smart kids again? He tried to shake the feeling. Surely Gabriella at least would value the time they spent working on the Midsummer’s Night Talent Show and all the times he visited her by the pool.

He stepped out of Sharpay’s car and looked up at the school feeling severe discontent. He didn’t know why he was so nervous. Why after an entire summer of hanging out and generally goofing off would they just give him up once setting foot in school?

So he walked into school with Sharpay, hoping for the best and completely unprepared for the worst that was about to happen. When he got in, he immediately spotted Martha, who began to chat with him about dance moves and whatever else. Sharpay found some of her girlfriends and Ryan thought he was in the clear. He at least found one person who appreciated his company. He was happy and satisfied with himself until when he was walking towards his locker, he saw Chad walking towards him. Ryan began to wave and say “Hey!”

I sing from my heart of the power of love, just a girl with a ukulele.

Chad just merely gave him a sidelong glance and said nothing. Ryan stared after him feeling hurt and confused. Despite what Gabriella had told him over the phone, he and Taylor couldn’t have really broken up over him, could they?

Come to me, my sweet one, and be still.

Ryan found no problems with the other Wildcats in the next passing week, though he chose to sit with his sister at lunch because he knew Chad would be there at the Wildcat table. Of course the time came when he finally faced up to what he was feeling. He was pissed. After spending so many long hours together, why the hell was Chad to reluctant to stay in the same as it was during the summer. It sucked and he felt terrible particularly when Gabriella had called him over his stay at the Hamptons.

They had been having a pretty good conversation about what it was like in New York and what everyone was up to back in New Mexico. She managed to get to the all important topic last. She said, “Well, Chad and Taylor broke up …” She said it slowly as if she didn’t know how he would react.

He said, “And why did they break up?” He only asked out of curiosity of her strange tone of voice. Or so that’s at least what he told himself.

“Well,” she said, “I know they were arguing one day at the resort … and your name came up … but it was only once though!” She reassured him.

“And why would my name come up?” Ryan asked feeling a little guilty … but he had done nothing wrong …

“Well,” She started again, “Taylor doesn’t mean to be … well, a jerk, she-I guess she just got jealous of how much time you were spending with Chad and they never really spent much time together this summer … but Chad kept saying it was never working out even after they went out at the end of last year. So now they’re done.”

“Oh.” Was all that he said.

I`ll grasp your tail and stroke each tender gill.

Back at school Ryan didn’t know what to expect when he cornered Chad one day after school to ask him what was up.

When they got to a quiet hallway, Chad just stared at Ryan expressionless.

Ryan looked at him incredulous. Was he serious? Were they just not going to talk at all? Forget that! “So are you just not going to talk to me anymore?” He asked fuming.

“What?” Asshole, was that all he said? Stupid jock!

“What’s what? This is so frustrating. I don’t do anything to you and you’re just ignoring me! I can’t take this anymore!” Ryan turned on his heel and left.

Chad called after him, but he didn’t turn around. Instead he met Sharpay in the parking lot and they made their way home. She had been bugging him the whole way home what was his problem and finally he might have done the worst thing possible for this whole situation.

He told Sharpay.

Of course a couple of hours later they both hadn’t expected to have Chad arrive on their doorstep asking the help to see Ryan. He met Sharpay instead.

“My brother doesn’t want to see you!” She called to him from the steps scathingly.

“I have to talk to him Sharpay. It’s important.”

My sweet Prince.

Sharpay looked into Chad’s daring face as she reached the bottom of the stairs. For someone ho had been serving her ice tea at dinner all summer, he sure had guts defying her now. She started her comeback with, “Not to hi-”

“Shar!” Ryan cut her off from the stairs. “It’s okay.” He said stopping it before it got any worse. He gestured for Chad to follow him upstairs. Chad got the message and they went upstairs and into Ryan’s room.

Sharpay huffed loudly from the banister.

{break}

“You’re here because …” Ryan started for him.

“Because I don’t understand you!” Chad retorted.

The clouds turned grey, and the big sky cried, and the ocean had a fit.

“Understand me how?” Ryan inquired angrily.

“Understand how you can have this hold over me! Taylor and I break up because she thinks you’re seducing me and … that I’m falling for it …” He said. He had started off sounding angry, but he ended slowly.

“Chad …” Maybe he had inadvertently outdone himself. Chad … falling for his charms … well, no one but Troy Bolton could resist the Evans charm. And ever he had nearly fallen for Sharpay’s trap.

“So what are you saying?” Ryan went on.

“When I’m with you things feel easy … but then they get hard. Hard on me and it doesn’t feel right, but then when I talk to you again and I’m near you, everything just falls into place. It’s a kind of feeling I never felt with Taylor.”

“And?” Ryan’s voice softened. Surely he must be dreaming.

Chad seemed to be stumbling over his own words. But finally he smiled and said, “I can show you better than I can tell you.” And he walked up to Ryan and kissed him.

Ryan wrapped his arms around Chad and kissed him back. The sensation was startling. They kissed and kissed until they finally landed back on Ryan’s bed and the things Chad could do with his tongue was positively extraordinary. Ryan was actually unsurprised when he found his shirt floating to the ground and who threw it, nobody knew. Chad’s shirt was off too and how that had happened, Ryan didn’t know that much either, but he liked it.

He liked to see the bareness and he liked the fact that he was allowed to bit any surface his mouth reached. Chad didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he was screaming for more. It was driving Ryan wild. This was of course, much better than any dream he might have had previous.

He almost felt like a savage beast locked away for too long when he kissed Chad. He was so hungry. Ryan’s hands eventually made their way south where something seemed to be frozen and stiff from the excitement and it was even happier to be receiving its share of the attention.

And Chad was just taking it. He pleasured Ryan with his mouth and his tongue and not before long they had become one and reached the point of no return. This was the greatest, most climactic moment of their time spent together and it ended, not so fast to be forgotten quickly, but in just enough time to leave a mark … or two on Ryan’s bed sheets.

As they lie under Ryan’s bedspread huffing and holding each other Chad said, “That felt faster than I thought it would.”

“Apparently we have been dating under the table all summer, it was in good timing. At least that’s what I think.” Ryan said panting.

Chad laughed a little. He said, “But it felt right. I hope it was supposed to. It was my first.”

“It was supposed to.” Ryan assured him.

They both smiled at each other under the covers.

Round 2?

THE END.
