Been searching for a "starter tattoo" forever, yanno, something to get to make sure I dig tattoos before I go for a huge pair of wings on my back, heh.

I think a septagram would be excellent. (Seven pointed star, "elven star" or "faerie star", usually used to show belief in the fae realm ( Read more... )

Pretty star. I like! I think forearm is a bit more interesting than upper arm. But which part of the upper arm do you mean? Like, shoulder, or underneath, or what?

Try this: draw it on with an indelible pen, and leave it for a few days, live with it, see how it feels.

Thanks! I might put it in a circle, but I don't want it to look too pentagram-y, heh.

Location - dunno! I want a fairly unconventional location, so maybe front or slightly underneath if on the upper arm, I dunno. Lalala. Fun to think about.

well, speaking personally...

i got my only tattoo 16 years ago. its a fairy on my shoulder blade. ironically 16 years after getting it, its one of the most important things/passions in my life (fairies, not tattoos). shoulder blade is a decent spot to have it, you can hide it when you want, unless like me you dress in ballet style fairy costumes and it shows...i feel bashful/a little embarrassed when a little girl points it out while i am entertaining...although they seem to really like it.

if i could do it over again, i would not get a tattoo at all. yes, i have tattoo regret. but, like i said, at least its not in an overt place, not is it an obnoxious piece.

i would advise against getting a tat on your arms. i think you are young enough to possibly have tattoo regret as well, a few years down the road.

OR i could just keep my mouth shut about it and mind my own business...

but i guess you did ask opinions :)

Thanks for the perspective, Posie! I haven't seen or noticed your fairy, that's cool. :)

I feel kind of like I have more non-tattoo-regret than I would have of tattoo-regret, heh. But, I definitely don't want to get anything that I would eventually regret - I know plenty of people who have tattoos they regret, which is probably part of why I've waited so long.

Hiding is an odd topic for me - I don't want it to be hidden, really. If I did, I don't think I'd bother with getting one at all. It's supposed to be a bit in-your-face anti-establishment expression. I want it for that reason, but yeah, if I change my mind in the future I'll be screwed, so I should think about that.

food for thought: tattoo placement on boys is slightly different from tattoo placement on girls. we have more curves and more "pretty" places to put them. i find forearm tats sexier than upper arm tats, but maybe that's just me.

i worry about tattoo regret, like posiefairy mentioned.. so if you are looking to get a "starter" tattoo and aren't sure about the whole tattoo thing but still want the experience or the knowledge that you have a tattoo on your body somewhere, put it in a subtle place.

It's a good thing to think about - curves and pretty places. :) I'll have to think about that more. I too prefer forearm tattoos. <3

I have a goblet with that symbol! Keep in mind, that it is also a reference to the Astrum Argentum....

That aside, I think it would be properly placed between the shoulder blades. Which is kind of a bitch to see it, but it seems like a perfect place. I would say that a small one on the wrist would be good too, but it would hurt a lot, and it would be hard to cover up, which is a no-no in the professional world.

Small of the wrist is gorgeous, and I would do it there except that it's become a really trendy place to get a tattoo in Portland lately, and I am not a trend-follower.

There are a lot of different references related to that symbol, and I'll have to do a bit more research before committing. It's beautiful and it is mainly a faerie/elven symbol, but if too many unsavory establishments have embraced it, I might have to just go for a chaos star or something, I dunno. :)

Hip has always been one of my first choices. If I would have gotten a tattoo at age 17, it would have been there. :)
