Doing this in a numbered list, because.

1. Most of the reason why I've been gone is that I haven't had a computer with steady internet access at home since mid-June. I was busy moving, and then I moved, and now I just don't have internet access in the study. Working on that!

Happy belated birthday! I thought your tumblr was awesome. I fear the tumblr time suck, so I only go to tumblr sites I know about, and I resist the browsing because that would be endless.

Alphas. Dude. It doesn't really get better, and I wanted to like it so much, because shave off the beard and I think David Straitharn is quite sexy. But the back end of S1 dragged so much (except for the ep with Brent Spiner, that one is good), and I've cued up the first few eps of S2. I think I just find it to be a really depressing show -- there's a gloom that hangs over it. They have some nice bits of dialogue, but ... it feels like obligation viewing. But of course, YMMV.

Yeah, it's an easy thing to use as a timesink! It doesn't feel like communicating, though, (even if it is on some level), more like watching a CSI marathon on television. I feel a bit dull when I come out of it.

David Straitharn is the best actor in it by far, and Rosen seems to be the most nuanced character. I don't know if it's dark, so much as it's an odd combination of lighthearted procedural and heavy drama... where it's a little too much of the one for me to take it seriously as the other. The procedural bits mean that it makes okay background viewing, though.
