Super non-specific comment, but yes, yes, and yes. <3333 AND WHILE I'M OF THE OPINION THAT THERE HAS ALWAYS AND INCREASINGLY BEEN SOMETHING WRONG WITH DEAN, I think this may be the point where someone finally up and says, "Dude, wtf is wrong with you????" And I do mean that in the kindest and most sympathetic of ways, I swear.
Yeah, there have definitely been things wrong with Dean before, PSTD wise and drinking wise and self image wise, but it's never felt like the main plot. Except maybe in season three? But the rest of the time, it's been SOMETHING IS UP WITH SAM BUT IT IS A MYSTERY AS TO WHAT, which is interesting! I like his powers and whatnot! But I'm also excited about a change.
OMG OMG OMG SAAAAMMM HIS DOG AND HIS GUILT AND HIS ATTEMPT TO ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT HE CAN GET AWAY AT SOME POINT MAYBE HE WILL ACTUALLY LIVE THROUGH THIS MAYBE HE WILL HAVE AN OKAY LIFE HE HASN'T THOUGHT THAT WAS IN THE CARDS FOR SO LONG BUT MAYBE NOW. MAYBE NOW. OR MAYBE HE THINKS HE HAD HIS ONE (OR TWO) CHANCES AND THEY'VE SLIPPED AWAY AND THIS IS HIS CODA, HE IS PICKING UP HIS DEATH ONCE MORE.
pacing issues (IN SPN?! NEVER!), clunky flashback (also not a first), and a lot of exposition HAHAHA oh yes, all of this. And way too much of Dean doing the usual "YOUR BEHAVIOR IS BAD REGARDLESS OF THE SIMILAR THINGS I HAVE DONE AND THE THINGS I HAVE TOLD YOU BECAUSE RIGHT NOW I DON'T LIKE IT" routine, imho. >__>
and when it finally came time for him to make the same decision again, he did something differently I didn't think about it quite this linearly - more just a "For fuck's sake, Dean, do you not realize he has basically been a hunter for you since the show started?" - and I really love how your analysis reflects on Sam's character. Especially since… I mean, we know the kid is awfully smart; I like that this feels a little bit clinical and very logical in a way that is both a bit soulless!Sam-ish and still utterly relatable. The poor thing must be tired. ;___

more just a "For fuck's sake, Dean, do you not realize he has basically been a hunter for you since the show started?
Ha, well, there was a lot in the middle where I think Sam was hunting because he didn't think he had a chance for anything else anymore, especially season four! The whole special kid/demon blood thing, where he figured he was part of the supernatural world, best try to do good with it. But, uh. He figured out how that goes. Ever since then, there's been a lot of inertia pulling him along.
I can't wait for more Kevin. Osric Chau is quickly becoming my favorite, he did an AMA the other day that I spent all of yesterday fangirling over.
The one thing I'm sad about is that there probably won't be much Benny/Cas interaction that's not All About Dean, you know, for good reason as he's the main character and all. But I find it interesting to imagine how nonhumans interact with humans. Dean's really the odd one out there.
OMG!!!!! No time to trawl through that whole thing, but read enough to love SPN fandom even more and discover that Osric Chau is a doll. Just. I want to snuggle him.
yes yes the reversal of the what is wrong with who mystery of the season at last :DDD
Also Sam's guilt, but his fear too, because like you said, he fucking nearly destroyed the world the last time he tried to save his brother. WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF HE TRIES AGAIN.
OMG OMG SAAAAAAMMM YES HIS GUILT AND HIS FEAR AND WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO NEXT BUT HE WILL STILL LET HIMSELF GET PULLED BACK IN FOR HIS BROTHER AND MAKE DEAN FOOD OMG.
I was simply overwhelmed with Sam feelings and I was so unused to it. I like Sam, but rarely do I have the instinctual urge to capslock his name without too much prompting. ME TOO IT WAS AMAZING. I mean, I almost always feel compassion for Sam and have loved his character arcs, but I usually am not overwhelmed in a visceral way with Sam feelings either
( ... )
I could continue getting overwhelmed with Sam feelings! I enjoyed the experience!
This sounds really, really dumb, but I totally didn't count Dean's fierce abandonment issues when thinking about his characterization in the ep. Though I think at this point, he expects to be abandoned, too. The natural order of things is people leaving him, so he has to fight to keep them with him.
