Is hometown loyalty all it's cracked up to be? Is it even "cracked up to be" anything? Or did I just write that cuz it sounded like a clever way to kick off something that's been rollin' around in my head lately

see, heres the thing: you can get inspiration from anything/anywhere. its just that somethings are a whole hell of lot less interesting to portray. its not that all creative people come from new york, its just that their movies are usually more interesting to watch than someone who makes a movie about kansas.
you have to have some real creativity (aka yimou, kitano, wes anderson in their quieter films) to make something ordinarily dull seem interesting/worthwhile. but it can be done.
and jim jarmusch didnt get all hipster/funky till he moved to new york ;)
"and jim jarmusch didnt get all hipster/funky till he moved to new york ;)"
bah! That's right. Dammit... :)
But yeah, something that I do know, but didn't manage to get out in this little rant, was that people who are inherently creative/resourceful would be that way no matter where they grew up - but that brings in the whole Nature vs. Nurture thing, and I don't feel like getting into that.
So I guess I wasn't too far off on the trash thing. Now I know where I can store all those corpses that've been piling up in my garage. Just need to, you know, get a job at Old Navy now...
i think the greatest artists are the ones who make interesting stories out of simple subjects. i guess it's kinda like, any stylist or makeup artist can make a pretty girl look pretty. but you know you gots some skills when you can make some broke girl look pretty decent.
i'm feelin the same way you are though. i guess that means i'm maturing a little slow
Actually, I think I'm just thinking too far ahead of myself. I SHOULD be focused on just getting through college, but I'm in this mindset like I've already graduated...
It's really true about the whole "making something simple into something interesting" philosophy. There are endless examples, particularly with shows/movies like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Swingers. Also, Hayao Miyazaki has an extraordinary talent for making everyday actions and surroundings seem beautiful.
I would write more, but I'm crazy busy, and I'm sure I'll talk to you again soon enough.
