Goooood morning, kiddiwinks!
Welcome to another day of Delayed Pilot Reviews by SWMBO!
Today I'll be looking at three very different pilots: Running Wilde, Detroit 1-8-7 and Lone Star, (I sulked about it yesterday and then ended up watching it last night anyway)
First, lets start with Running Wilde!
Ok, the premise is terrible and cheesy but lets face it, *nobody* plays a spoiled, self-involved rich guy like Will Arnett. He is awesome through and through and totally made the show (shocker). I was pretty much happy and snickering every time he was on screen so, cheesy premise aside, I will totally watch this show. The cast is just fun - particularly the best friend/neighbor/nemesis.
Three mutant thumbs up.
Detroit 1-8-7
I really liked this a lot - it's very similar to Southland in the way it tells the story, although not quite as faux-documentary-camera work. But it does the voice overs and it does the switching between scenes (although it may be more compelled to tie things together and it does seem to be more about resolving things rather than continuing storylines). And it's all homicide detectives, no beat cops.
But still, really good, with some unexpected moments. Great cast - for the most part, it didn't fall into the 'cast way too many pretty people' trap, which I love. Only 3 superpretty people on the cast, and it's only really jarring on the ME. She felt like the weak point, actually, mostly her entire scene felt crammed in there to introduce her and establish her quirks but not adding anything to the pilot, so hopefully that'll improve as the series goes on.
I LOVED the scene when they had to go out and find the bullet casing on the side of the highway and they kept finding old ones that were the wrong kind and just like 'detroit on the side of the highway, go figure'
The ending was surprising, in a 'holy heck, did they go there?' and I hope he's not dead, cause he was adorable.
Crazyish detective was an A+++, I will enjoy a show with him. I am already a little bored with Mr. Feb (I can't remember ANYBODY's real name), but I figure I'll get over that.
I will totally watch this show unless it takes a dramatic turn for the worse.
Finally, Lone Star!!
Ok, here's the thing about yesterday's annoyance with it. First of all, I didn't remember the premise of the show (if I even looked it up, sometimes I'm just like PILOT! SHINY AND NEW, MUST WATCH!!) but from the first scene plus the name "Lone Star" made me think it was 'kid of a con artist grows up to become SUPER DETECTIVE'.
Which I was like, been there, done that. Well, not me, personally, although if I WAS the kid of a con artist I bet I'd be a super detective. Way to go for being honest, Dad! Anyway, that plus the next really bad scene with the sex-kitten-girlfriend was just sorta nauseating and I had to go away. (swmbo trufax: I hate it when a show - or movie - has a sex scene in the first 3 minutes. It's a thing)
Anyway, at that point, I turned it off disgruntled and went and watched Hawaii Five-O (Um, I totally can't remember the way that show is punctuated, I am pretty sure it'll change every time I write it)
Then last night I was like, ok, it's a pilot, I need to give it MORE than that.
And it turned out not to be a super detective after all, but a con man leading a double life and still doing cons with his dad! And he has a girlfriend in one con and a wife in another con, and the wife is from a super wealthy oil family and he's trying to juggle everything and it's actually pretty cool.
Now, I will say the girlfriend (the one from that first scene) is godawful. Not the actress, but the character, she's seriously just boring and the only thing is sex sex sex as far as I can tell. Well sex and coy cuteseyness. The wife, on the other hand, seems pretty interesting and sharp.
But Bob, the guy, he's kinda interesting, with his daddy issues and his longing for a regular, real life and getting himself in over his head but being an awesome con man and torn up about it and the fact that he's done the cons so much he's actually GOOD at his job and the plotting against him by his brother-in-law and...it's gonna be fun to watch that. The girlfriend (who he is about to marry so he'll have two wives), those scenes are gonna be a little more painful to get through but I love the oil company stuff. Good times.
So I am sorry for being totally wrong about the show, from premise on out and I will also watch it for a while, if with less enthusiasm than the other two. Until it's cancelled or I get too nauseated by bad character development on Lindsay.
THE END.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of Delayed Pilot Reviews! I am quite sure there will be another next week, because the pilots JUST KEEP COMING!!
Love,
Me
