But now we finally have our timing right - both here! HUZZAH!
And oh man, now I honestly don't know which I would recommend to you. I mean, the movie looks really good but the book was incredible and I feel like that, at most, they will have to gloss over it just for the sake of time, but ... it's not really a book that I feel is SPOILABLE by knowing the story.
But you should read it even if it turns out you don't like the movie if you see the movie first! And of course, definitely if you do :)
I loved Cloud Atlas: The Book, too. So, so much! I don't expect the movie to match it, but I'm interested to see what they do with it. I love Tom Hanks rather fiercely, so he should make everything palatable. I wish we could go see it together for moral support and/or post-movie bitching.
I am still absolutely conflicted on how it turned out, I mean, I thought some of the individual scenes were brilliant but ... did it WORK? I don't think so. I don't think it hung together as a whole, and there just wasn't enough time in 2 and a half hours to do it justice, and I don't know that it translated the 'different types of literary devices' to 'different types of movie devices' ... it is like it started to go that direction but then went back to literary and back to movie and it didn't QUITE work. Although some of the scenes were sheer perfection, and there are a few images that stick with me. You will have to let me know what you think!
HEY. So this is entirely unrelated to anything in this post, but you're the one person I can geek out over The Song of Achilles with, so. Deal with it.
I went to the Boston Book Festival today and saw Madeline Miller in an hour long discussion about the Iliad and her book and I just... TOO PERFECT.
ANYWAY, I went through the signing line, and I was telling her how great the book was, and that I had tweeted her right after I finished and was full of emotions, and Miller was like I REMEMBER YOU, and basically she is adorable and seriously, you'd think she'd be like, lol I won The Orange Prize I don't need to pay attention to weird people on the internet who write me 140 character freak outs.
I JUST NEEDED TO TELL SOMEONE WHO MIGHT ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THESE THINGS. THE END.
Ok, first of all, this comment is delayed, but I got the email notification while I was all curled up on my couch with this wretched cold and it seriously made me grin from EAR TO EAR and also gave me the WILL TO LIVE. I mean, the notes are really interesting but also the fact is, I love that book SO MUCH and it makes me so happy that she's just as awesome as her book and also now I just want to read it again and again and again.
THIS IS ME SO HAPPY AND EXCITED I AM ALSO UNABLE TO PROCESSS!!!

(I seriously typed up my handwritten notes, that's how much I loved it.)
