This joke is in poor taste, spirits.
Give me a lump of coal?
Well... I suppose I must atone for my imagined sins, then. I presume I am not alone?

I think we are supposed to make one good deed before the end of the year.

Honestly though, I am a doctor. My life is dedicated to good deeds!

Well, you obviously did something to piss 'em off.

[He shrugs]

Well we'll work something out...hmm...I have an idea anyway.

Do you now? Are you going to share, or is it a secret?

It comes from a time when homes were heated by coal. It was believed by people back then that a person was poor because God was punishing them for being sinful, and coming from a sinful family.
Children in poor houses received coal on Christmas in order to heat their rooms, while rich children, who could afford such things normally, got candy. It was then forever associated with coal being for naughty children, even to this day, though even naughty children do not receive coal... mostly because coal has become rather expensive and difficult to find due to electric heating and dwindling coal resources worldwide.

As near as I can tell, it seems somewhat arbitrary. I have not done anything to deserve coal.

They're just asking to have the place burned to the ground.

It may defeat the purpose if we don't at least evacuate first. Ghosts tend to survive conflagrations.
