For those who may be fans but had not heard, George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones" has been picked up by HBO for a 10 part mini-series. No word on release dte yet, but it looks like we'll be ordering HBO some time down the line. :)
Here's a character, develop a liking, watch him/her be tortured and killed. Lather, rinse and repeat for thousands of pages interspersed with inane space wasting drivel about who was wearing what in which colors in that particular scene.
Interesting. I actually liked that he had the guts to kill off some of his major protagonists -- that rarely happens in a book, let alone in fantasy. For me, it added an edge to the writing since I could never feel "safe" about any character making it out alive. I had to relish each character in the moment, seeing as how they might be pushed off a cliff in the next chapter. :)
That's not to say there isn't some fat that could be trimmed, especially in the later books (and especially in the latest one, which I admit was read more out of stubborness then great desire on my part). But the overall plot has moved along well enough for me to be able to either absorb or slide past some of the excessive descriptions. Plus, I'm still waiting for the initial hook (which was fantastic, IMO) to pay off, which has been enough so far to keep me with him in the long slog.

This makes me love the characters all the more, knowing that anyone of them could die. It does add that edge for the reader. I've heard a lot of writers on con panels say they wish they could get away with knocking off a main character, but they fear fan (and editor/publisher) reaction.

I vowed if I ever met Martin I'd punch him.
