a serious artistic review

I mentioned in the last post that the anime is already making Shuri look "cute" while in the manga there's a noticeable divergence as time goes on between how the Oaks look.

LET'S TAKE A LOOK, SHALL WE?

SHURI'S FIRST APPEARANCE:

Notice also that "Shuuri-kun is always so reliable," which seems to have been totally forgotten in the later chapters of the manga lolol. I always took it to mean that he worked hard in school and did well on tests and just didn't know how to deal with practical application, BUT NO, ANTWORT MAKES IT PRETTY CLEAR THAT THAT ISN'T THE CASE EITHER.

Shuri eyerakes notices Teito:

Now, Shuri reappears after like 25 chapters:

And Ayanami gets his attention:

NOTICE THE HUGE EYES. SO MOE. I LIKE HOW THEY'RE LIKE "O HE'S ABOUT TO GET TRAUMA, LET'S MAKE HIM CUTE~!"

In contrast, here is what happens to Hakuren as the artstyle evolves. Hakuren first appears in chapter 9:

A point is made of how alike they look, but by chapter 13 when he's more sympathetic, he too begins to look softer:

AND IS MOE~

But then the mangaka are like "Okay that's enough of that, let's make him manly again" by the time we get to chapter 31 (right after Antwort):

Okay no possibly I just wanted to include that because it contains Hakuren hitting on himself. In fact I've forgotten what the point of this was. I think it involved Shuri going from manly to moe while Hakuren went in the opposite direction but mostly I think it involved me gratuitously posting the dereface panel and Hakuren coming on to Razette while she looks like him.

SO I GUESS MY THESIS IS BASICALLY "SHURI GOT CUTE AND HAKUREN GOT LESS CUTE" but really what matters is that Oaks are all sexy and you should read our canon and . . . no that's it really. Probably I was actually going somewhere with this. :|a
