Never Say Goodbye--LJ Idol Week 1 Topic: Saying Goodbye

I don't remember where I heard it, but a number of years ago I heard something along the lines of "Never say goodbye, always say 'see you later'". The idea behind this is that "goodbye" seems very final, whereas "see you later" leaves room for getting together again. This has been my philosophy on goodbyes ever since. I like that policy; I should take it up and try to get my friends to take it up as well. (At least with me; I don't give a damn what they say to other people.) Maybe that would cure my fear of goodbyes, seeing as that fear is based on the perceived finality they have.

It has worked well for me, and I've found that most often, if I say "see you soon" or "talk to you later" first, the responses I get are similar.

I like to say, "bye, for now." or "bye, but only for now."

(I'm also in lj idol and was browsing entries).

Yeah, I've been known to say "bye for now" before too. I don't like always using the same thing because it starts to sound canned or fake, so I try to use lots of different phrases that basically mean "see you later" or "talk to you soon". :)

Nicely written entry with a good take on the subject.

I too have an aversion to saying "goodbye" to someone I clearly intend to see again. Breaking my husband of the habit was a little harder but we don't use that word unless we clearly mean it.

Thanks. :) It's such an easy habit to get into, and it's one of those things you just say automatically, so it's that much harder to get out of it.
