LJ Idol Week 2 Topic: "I Don’t Care About Apathy: What I "Should" Care About - But Don’t"

Sep 30, 2008 10:06

"They're having a gas shortage in Charlotte, you better check on that before you go to make sure you don't end up getting stuck there!", mom says with more than a hint of glee in her voice. What I didn't say, but thought quite loudly was, getting stuck in Charlotte would be fine with me. What I did say was "A gas shortage isn't going to change ( Read more... )

Awesome you for standing up for yourself and doing what you want to be happy.

Even living several states away from my dad doesn't help him see me as being an adult ... or able to love more than one person at a time.

My mother moved in with us when she retired. I know of what you speak. It's tough.

I don't think they ever quite sort out that we're equals. Not really.

One of the advantages of being in the same city with my parents...I don't have to share living space with them. ;)

Nice entry. I'm lucky, I get along great with my mother.

For the most part, I do too. My mom and I talk and do things together a lot, actually. This subject, in particular, is a sore point, however.

Yeah, I live in Charlotte and it's been nuts for like three weeks now! I hope somebody fixes it soon.

Not cool how your mom still tries to control your life, though.

My SO in Charlotte says it's caused by consumer panic. An article I read about it said that the demand for gas is higher than it usually is this time of year, which would seem to support the consumer panic theory.

Ike came through here as a wind storm (no rain, just really high winds) and ripped up tons of trees, caused the most power outages I can ever remember us having, etc. We had a "gas shortage" for maybe 2-3 days, and that was in part consumer panic and part simply because gas stations didn't have power. As power was restored to more and more of the city, the "gas shortage" died out, I guess because people felt safe once the lights back. ;) I don't really understand how Charlotte and some other areas in the south are still having issues. I jokingly offered to bring a huge container of gas with us since gas is readily available and dropping (SLOWLY) in price here. Heh.

Yeah, they said it was initially because the refineries in the Gulf had shut down, and were taking a while to get back online. It seems we're receiving shipments now, but as soon as they arrive they are gobbled up. I think it's like you said, we're so afraid of running out again that we're not allowing our supplies to be fully restored.

Ah, how I recognize this. My mother tries to find all sorts of reasons to have me do what she wants. But she'd *NEVER* meddle with our business, oh no! She's not like that. But, she'll feel sick if we give our daughter the name we choose (she wasn't happy).

Yeah, my mom has said on numerous occasions that I'm an adult and can do what I want, and then goes on to tell me how to live my life. :P Why would your mom be upset with the name you chose for your daughter?

Because it was not her idea of a name, and because I didn't give her a whole bunch of Christian middle names that are "tradition" (but she forgot them for my sister :P)
