It's made a huge difference. Now that it's open, there's about 900sq feet all together rather than being chopped up.

I can't wait to see what it looks like with the new built in bookcases and the flooring! It's going to be awesome! :D

Huge change already. You will love the open plan. At least it was a good start after all the complications.

Mom decided to change an o ring in the dripping kitchen faucet. Yeah didn't go smoothly. Water everywhere and a bigger leak. Now we need to buy a new faucet.

I think we need to start a blog for home improvement horror stories. Lol.
Stay strong.

It is a huge change. We let the dogs into the front after the work was totally done, and they were totally confused; they kept walking back and forth over where the wall used to be. LULZ.

Still getting used to how bright it is in there in the early morning, too! We've got light coming in from the stain glassed front door, the all-glass sliding patio door, and the two windows.

It's awesome.

Your poor mom! Faucets aren't cheap, either. :(
They always make those home repairs look easy on tv then, when you go to do it, it's super easy to get in way over your head!

THIS! OMFG! The finish product is usually good, but getting there is a pain in the butt!

This transformation is going to be exciting to see! I think it's cool your construction guys are going to be able to use parts of your house in future homes, too. (Can you get a donated materials tax receipt?) I'd also think that reusing stuff might make the *de*struction tidier.

The company's the one that gets the tax break. It's easier for them to do it because they donate a lot of stuff over the year. And honestly? We're not really fussed about it.

In exchange, they pass savings on to their customers because they haul everything away themselves rather than having us rent a dumpster which would have been approx $800 + delivery and retrieval, dumping fee (to place things in the landfill), and a 'oil fee' (gas). It was actually going to cost a little over a thousand just to get the stupid dumpster!

It's also nice to know that our old stuff is going to help a family in need. :)
They also take the trailer with them every day so there's no unsightly mess when they're not here.

Despite the slow start it really looks like they accomplished a good chunk.

Good luck as you roll into another big project!

I'm glad Habitat will benefit from this -- it must be a nice bonus for you and your family.

Thank you! I'm glad things are rolling along, too.

The manager swung by today to get the payment for the Cypress beams and the down payment on the kitchen cabinets. It was the largest check Mom's ever written poor thing!

We didn't even know they worked with Habitat until they arrived yesterday and asked if we minded them turning over the materials. We were all pleased with the idea because we thought it would just end up in a landfill somewhere.

They were really careful about pulling out all the moulding, chair rails, etc. It meant the demo was a lot cleaner, too.

Construction guys do operate on their, wildly variable, time schedule, don't they? I'd somehow forgotten that aspect of it. Still, work is started and the space is going to be amazing once complete. I hope you keep up with the pics, I love pics.

That's how they get you; just enough time passes between jobs that you forget how utterly annoying it all is.

And, of course, HGTV is there to poison your mind into thinking it's super fast and easy. :P

I hope you keep up with the pics, I love pics.

I plan on it. Unfortunately, nothing happened on the house today; they're coming "sometime next week...maybe Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday" to work on the living room.

*head/desk*

Apparently, their main focus is on some woman with a $5 million dollar house doing a $100,000 renovation.

It must be nice to have that kind of cash. :P
