Normally, I stay out of politics, but this rant was just so perfectly on point that it needs to be seen. Politicians aren't even trying to pretend that they give a shit about the people they're supposed to represent ( Read more... )

Jon Stewart is awesome.

He even went and helped people in Stanton Island clean up post-storm and did so quietly without first informing the media like some other celebs did for brownie points.

And, of course, they'll have the same damned health care most people have -- none. They can be "self pay"/out of pocket, too.

Viola! Instantly, the coffers are filled with millions saved!

... sadly, so very true.

just as a matter of interest, what is minmum wage there, it's $606.00 a week here and I wondered how it compared?

It's $7.45 an hour, and it's an hourly wage so you're not guaranteed a set amount per week or month. A lot of big box stores and chain restaurants get around paying benefits by not allowing workers to get enough hours to meet the requirement for full time workers.

Also, there's 4 states that don't have a state law that forces employers to give out that amount. Louisiana is one. I know Montana is another...and I think Mississippi is on the list, too.

Most people I know make about $5.50/hr here as "minimum wage". Every single one of them lives well below the poverty line. Most make a few dollars too much to receive benefits like food stamps, too which is ridiculous. It's almost like they want you not to work in order to qualify ( ... )

I didn't realise how poorly paid American workers are.... those pay rates are appalling!!

Can't believe how badly teachers are treated, here the starting wage for a primaty (grade?) school teacher is about $40,000-$45,000 and a high school teacher starts on $52,571. How do they expect to attract teachers to your education system when they treat them so poorly there.

My Mum is an aged pensuioner and she gets %772.00 dollars tax free a fortnight and as the working week for a fulltime employee is 38 hours or less a week, mum Mum gets $10.15 an hour. That makes how American workers are treated even worse.

You need to come live in OZ!! :D
