My favorite band

I don't know why, but I've been feeling compelled to write an entry about this for awhile. It has absolutely nothing to do with writing. Though, no one is forcing me to only write about writing. So, here it is.

My favorite band is Hanson. Yes, I liked Hanson back in '97 (13 years ago now? Guh.) when Mmmbop came out. Yes, I had pictures of Taylor Hanson all over my bedroom. Yes, I also became one of the fans to denounce Hanson and move on to other things. Like the Backstreet Boys. Yes, I'm aware that I was a teenybopper of epic proportions; I'm not denying that.

But then, the 00s hit, and Hanson released This Time Around. I couldn't deny the fact that it was good music, and I bought the CD. Secretly, of course.

Because, as a fanbase, we've never really been accepted. I never outwardly displayed my love for them at school back in '97 because I was a smart girl, and I knew that I was going to get made fun of for it. But why? Because they had long hair? So what? I've asked a lot of people about it, and almost everyone said that they have respect for them because they've always written and performed their own music, but most people aren't willing to really give them a chance.

Honestly, it frustrates the hell out of me. I've seen them in concert three times now. I got to see them twice last fall, and my now-husband accompanied me both times. He admitted that they put on a good show, even if the music isn't really his bag. And it's true. They do put on a hell of a show, and they have the respect of a lot of musicians that the bashers idolize and follow.

This summer, they finally released their documentary called "Strong Enough to Break," which details the ridiculous process they had to go through to create and release their third studio album, Underneath. All of the dirty, awful, frustrating details are shown. All of the things that led to them leaving their record label and forming their own. Island/Def Jam wasn't letting them be Hanson, and who else are they supposed to be?

They'll probably never be at the top of the Top 40 charts ever again, but I honestly don't think that bothers them. They have a big fanbase, much larger than most people would ever imagine, and new people are discovering their recent music all the time. I, personally, have introduced several people to their music. It's all a matter of wiping old-school Mmmbopy Hanson from your brain and being willing to see them as this, because that's what they are today.

Okay, so they're all married with about a hundred kids between them. Who cares? So, a huge part of the fanbase is made up of psychos who regress back into their ridiculous teeny-bopper former selves at concerts (It's scary and embarrassing, really. And no, I'm not one of them.). Ignore them. I do.

I don't even know the names of the members of 98% the bands I listen to regularly. It's about the music, and I wish that people would give Hanson's music a chance. Forget who they were and take a look at who they are now. If you still don't dig it, then fine.

Just, forget them being like this.
And take a look at them like this.

And, if anyone wants to watch their documentary or their acoustic concert DVD with me, I'd be happy to sit there and drink wine with you while we do. Because they're awesome and so is wine.

Like them or not, at least try to give them a little respect, please.

And, simply because I think it's hilarious:

And, because I love this song:

And this one, too:

So that's pretty much it. They're my favorite band, and that's just fine with me. :)
