I need help. I need someone to give me a step by step instructional process on how to find, create and purchase and domain name. Not for me- but for my client. Can anyone help?
1) Make up a name, and check to see if it's already in use. 2) Find a registrar. Here's a long list of Internic accredited ones. Make sure the registrar provides it's own DNS service and web front end. 4) Pay the registrar money. 5) Find the IP address of the hosting computer, and create an 'A' record that points to it. 6) Wait for the change to propigate through DNS (anywhere from half an hour to half a day, depending on the phase of the moon and color of your underwear).
I used www.web.com and I like them. The hard part is coming up with the name, the rest is easy. You pick a few names, in case the first choice is taken, decide if it's a dot com, org, or net. That is to say that perhaps you are marketing something or someone, or it's a non-profit or other organization, or it's a networking kind of business. You then choose your domain name and decide if you want the place you've registered it through to host or not. I use www.tonhosting.com. It's just a matter of how big you want it to be. For both things you may have to pay with a credit card. Most domain registration sites will walk you through, but it helps to know if they're legitimate. :)
