I remember now.

Recently I found the English Cardcaptors on Youtube, and watched the show for the first time in about seven years. I now remember why I used to think the original Japanese version was weird. I'm just used to it now, but thinking about it, it's a little messed up ( Read more... )

Well... I agree with you that there were some things about the original Japanese version that weren't exactly good to show to a young American audience, of course that kind of stuff had to be taken out by Nelvana/4Kids ( ... )

I can see why cutting some of the plot was wrong in a sense, but I dunno, I think I wouldn't have liked it as much as a kid. The dub was aimed for both girls and boys, so Li had to make his appearance sooner than episode 8. Then there would have to be a few discrepancies to which cards Sakura had and when. I liked that competition aspect of Cardcaptors, with Sakura vs. Li in collecting all the cards. And they gave us plenty of flashbacks so it wasn't just a case of "oh yeah, and Sakura has _______ card now."

I guess as a kid who never watched CCS until watching the complete series as CC, I still see nothing wrong with it. It's just different. And without all the relationships that got in the way of the action.

Well, I think they had some good explanation for Yukito attracting the attention of boys... like something about Yue's powers... and something with the moon. Since Yue was my favorite character, I rather liked the attention the boys were supposed to have to the moon boy. =D

I don't know, I'm pretty fine with all the strange relationship stuff, because for me it was never really a little kid show or anything. The reason CLAMP put in all these different relationships was because they wanted to set an example of a world where everyone is accepted. However, here in the states the point was sort of lost and Nelvana/4Kids/whoever decided to aim it at an audience where perhaps it wasn't as "appropriate." I don't know.

Yeah, I do remember the attraction to Yukito having to do with his powers. That was also why Sakura would get all dreamy around Ms. Mizuki.

I hope I'm not implying the message that I don't like CCS, because it's still one of my favorite anime ever (it was one of my first, after Sailor Moon and around the same time as Pokemon). I'm just saying I wasn't used to seeing that stuff at the time.

And Tomoyo Daidouji is still harder for me to say than Madison Taylor. I always remembered having that issue.
