Like rhinestones falling from the sky

Mar 23, 2011 15:45

For those of you who didn't hear - On March 10, there was an explosion on the 6th floor of Choppin Hall (I work on the 4th, for reference). One of my friends, Rider, was at the center of it and hospitalized. We just received an email with the full story of what happened, so that speculation would stop. I'm going to copy-paste the whole email here ( Read more... )

this is life, explosions, science!, grad school

Oh wow. I'm glad he's okay. CHEMICALS AND GASES ARE SO... freaky and junk. :| I always have had a vague fear of cylinder explosions. I am never near them but I see them and go... ':|a if it exploded that would be horrible'.

:( Also I hope he gets better from his burns soon. I've had second degree burns myself, and they're no fun at all.

Yeeeeeaaah, it can get kinda nuts in this line of work, not gonna lie!! And of course, as the child who plays too many shooters with environment interaction, I've always been incredibly shy of gas cylinders... things go boom too easy, if you ask me.

Also why are we not LJ friends? May I add you? :x

:|b Yes you may add me.

For me it was like... I GREW UP NEAR A LOT OF PROPANE TANKS. And somehow I had morbid thoughts about them exploding and a chain reaction of exploding propane tanks. :|

Thank god you're safe!

But guh thankfully nothing major happened to him, I mean damn oxygen and hydrogen is dangerous and to be in the midst of it is really scary :O

Though I might be learning how to deal with oxygen tank for first aid next year if the trainers can get the go ahead from the higher ups.

I know -- I still cannot believe it happened two stories above me...! I heard a faint noise like someone dropping something heavy. Then when the fire alarm went off and we evacuated, someone told me what it really was... It was scary.

Yeah, he's lucky. That could have been much worse for him... :/

Good luck! And don't be too frightened - this is definitely a case of what can happen should things go wrong, but yes, SAFETY FIRST!! and all that jazz.

That's so frightening. I once had molten copper oxide explode on me!

...Okay it was like a tiny bit and it was actually just a bubble bursting and I was wearing gloves and absolutely nothing bad happen. 8|

BUT STILL???

More seriously though, that's scary. I'm glad he's okay! I can't imagine what it was like for him.

YES BUT STILL. It's enough to make you jump when something like that spews up on you. You're just kind of like "JKFLJDSKLA THAT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH WORSE /sob" Yeah, been there.

Man, I have so many battle scars from lab... Chlorosulfonic acid, man. >:

BUT ANYWAY, yes. He will be okay, and it coulda been worse. ♥ I'm gonna see if I can't figure out something to cook for him that won't end up tasting terrible. Zero confidence in my cooking ability... eheh. ^^;
