sweet allergy
Junsu stir in his sleep. His whole face scrunch as the smell of chocolate fills his room. He grabs a pillow and put it on his face, trying to block the smell from invading his breathing system. The strong stench of the cocoa treats never failed to make him feel nauseate.
Yes, he knows. How can such thing happen to a person, how can a person hate chocolate so much that he will vomit even just from the smell? Well, Junsu happen to be that person. Out of all the things in the world, Junsu is allergic of chocolate. Smelling it makes him dizzy, touching it makes him itchy and swollen all over, eating it? Might cause the death of him.
Peeking an eye from behind the pillow, Junsu look at the alarm clock on the side table. It’s time to get ready for school again. Sighing loudly, he throws the pillow from his face onto the floor and kicks the comforter off his pajama clad body. With one hand covering his nose, he gets off the bed and wobbles his way towards the bathroom.
After a refreshing shower, he put on his school uniform. Standing in front of the full length mirror, he checks his appearance, making sure his hair falls at the right place and his face is not bloated. It’s hard to be the most popular guy in high school and as the soccer team’s captain and the student body’s vice president; he is the most popular guy in his school. Hence, a perfect and charismatic form is a must. Satisfied enough, he grabs for his bag pack and casually sling it over his shoulder.
“Hugh!” Junsu almost fainted when the smell of chocolate gets stronger as soon as he cracks his bedroom door open. His legs go weak by the sudden odor attack. Gathering his strength, he pulled himself together. He took out a handkerchief from his pants back pocket and uses the fabric to cover his nose. With quick steps, he runs out of bedroom, down the stairs to get to the kitchen. The nearer he gets to the kitchen, the stronger the smell of chocolate attacks him. The smell definitely comes from the kitchen, Junsu concluded.
“Hyung!” Junsu shouted when he noticed the familiar back form of his older brother by the stove.
Jaejoong turn around, he beamed a smile at Junsu as if it is the most normal thing to see your brother with a handkerchief over his face, shooting death glares at you.
Jaejoong is five years older than Junsu. Since seven years ago, Jaejoong had been taking care of Junsu on his own after their parent’s death. Jaejoong is everything to Junsu, his brother, his mother and his father.
“Morning, Su.”
“What are you doing?”
“Making chocolates of course.” Jaejoong answered casually, ignoring the obvious anger on Junsu’s face.
“Yeah, I can smell that, thank you very much.” Junsu snorted. “My next question will be why you are making it when you know your brother is allergic to it and eating it for breakfast means my funeral in the evening.”
Jaejoong chuckle. “Don’t worry, it’s not your breakfast. I made it for Yunnie.”
“Well, if Yunho-hyung want chocolate, go and buy it for him. Why are you making it at home causing the whole house stinks with the smell and makes me suffocated?”
“I want to give special chocolates for Yunnie, that’s why I decided to made it myself. Today is Valentine’s Day, remember?”
“Oh hell shit. Now everywhere will stinks and I would never get clean air today. I’ll die.” Junsu dramatically hold his chest as if he’s in pain earning him a string of laughter from Jaejoong.
“Stop your drama. You’ve survive this day for 16 times already. Of course you’ll manage to go through it again this year.”
“Yeah, just watch your own brother suffers, alone, no one care about Kim Junsu, my own brother rather sees me drown in chocolate and die slowly, painfully.”
“Shut up, Su. Go to school now or you’ll be late. Yes, I’ve packed your breakfast because you don’t have the appetite to eat it in this chocolate stench kitchen.”
“Right.” Junsu nodded.
“Here’s a mask for you to wear so that you can survive the day without smelling those chocolates you’re allergic at.” Jaejoong handed his brother the green mask that’s use by the doctors in hospital. As a nurse, Jaejoong had a supply of a lot of medical stuff at their home.
Junsu took the mask from his brother, he shoves back the handkerchief that had been covering his nose into his pants back pocket and put on the mask.
“And here’s some paper bag for you to fill all of the chocolates you’ll get from your fans. Put it in your bag pack.” Junsu did as what his brother said.
“Remember, bring those chocolates home. Don’t throw it like what you did last year, it’s a waste.”
“Yes, umma.” Junsu bid his brother goodbye and peck him on his cheek before leaving for school.
School is not where Junsu want to be especially not on Valentine’s Day because it will be full of hormonal teenage girls giving chocolate and desperate teenage boys wanting chocolate. Definitely the last place Junsu wants to be today. The mask does quite a great job in blocking all the cocoa smell floating around the school from invading his nostril, he thanks his brother for it.
Junsu stand still in front of his locker. Hesitates to open it because he knows that it will be fill of the thing he hate the most in this world. No one in school knows about his allergy towards the most delicious treat considered by everyone around the world, that’s why every Valentine’s Day, he’ll end up with the most chocolates in school despite his allergy.
“Yo!”
Junsu turn to his right, he beamed at his best friend presence. The tall, slinky guy approaches him with a slap on his back. Junsu snickered at him. About no one in school knows about his allergy; let me rephrase that, only his best friend, Changmin knows about it.
“Eww, Min. You stinks.”
“Hehehe… sorry. Been eating chocolates from my fans.” Changmin grin widely.
Junsu and Changmin had been friends since kindergarten and they’re each other’s neighbor. Besides Junsu, Changmin is another popular guy in his school. Being the basketball team’s captain and the student body’s president, Changmin poses powers and charms to be popular though Junsu believes that he is more popular than Changmin.
“Yeah, I can smell that and I can see that. You’ve got some stuck on your teeth, pabo.”
“Eh, really?” The taller guy quickly brush off his teeth using his finger. Flashing his row of white teeth at Junsu again so that the latter can confirm that he had clean it off.
“All gone. Do something ‘bout your breath man, it stinks.”
“Well, too bad cause this is how my breath and everyone else’s in school will smell for today. Poor you ‘Mr. I’m allergic to chocolate and hates Valentine’s Day because it’s filled with chocolate’. Bohoo~”
Junsu just ogled his eyes at the tease. He darted his attention back to his locker, wondering whether should or not he open it. Of course he should because he needs to grab for his textbooks and classes will start in another ten minutes. Changmin, who understands his friend, definitely can read his anxious thought. He snatches the keys from Junsu’s hand and pushes the latter away from his locker.
“Stand back, let me be your dark knight and save your allergic ass.”
Junsu snorted.
Changmin inserted the key into the keyhole, turning it. A creak can be heard and the metal door flung open immediately.
“Wargh!” Changmin yelp in surprise as mountains of chocolates jump out from the locker, burying him almost completely.
Because of Valentine’s Day, learning session was cut to half which means the students have a lot of free time before the last bell rang. Most of them use the time to spend it with their lovers and some took the opportunity to go and give chocolates to their crush.
Being a single guy, Junsu decided to just stay at his desk, studying his weakest subject, English. It is weird when the most popular guy in school is still single, it’s not like no girls interested in him, it’s him who doesn’t have any interest in them. In fact, there will be a long line of girls queuing to be his girlfriend if he announces that he wants one but that is something that he will never wish for. More than long silky hair, soft skin, delicate hands, huge boobs and squeaky high-pitched voice; Junsu prefers short hair, rough yet firm skin, strong hands, broad chest and deep manly voice. Yes, Kim Junsu is gay.
“Junsu sunbaenim.” A soft voice ring Junsu’s ear. He put down the dictionary in his hands and turns to his side. He tries to beam a smile at the three girls standing by his desk though it’s useless because the mask hides his smile.
“I’ve made this chocolate for you.” The girl in the middle with blonde hair shyly handed him the neatly wrapped chocolate while the other two just silently stands behind her.
Now that’s the tenth time today, a girl will come and hand him chocolates which Junsu politely receive and shoved them into the plastic bags that are already fill with it. He did the same to the blonde girl.
“Thanks.” Junsu was planning to continue his study when he realizes the girls haven’t left him. Usually after he receives their chocolate, the girls will giggle like a fool and warily go but why the three of them are not leaving.
Junsu turn his attention back to the girls. The blonde girl is smiling brightly and her big eyes twinkle as she looks at Junsu.
“Yes?” Junsu asks, feeling uncomfortable at the stares.
“Aren’t you going to eat it?” She asks in expecting tone. “I’ve made it especially for you and I was hoping that you’ll eat it and tell me how it is. Don’t worry, I’ve tasted it and it’s delicious. I’ve made it with all of my love for you sunbaenim.”
“Err… I will but maybe later.”
“Why? Why can’t you eat it now? I want to watch you eat the chocolate I’ve made and hear you say how delicious it is. Why can’t you eat it now?” Somehow the girl’s tone start to change, she sound persistent.
“Aah…” Junsu shifted nervously on his seat. “Don’t worry, I’ll eat it later and I’ll tell you tomorrow about it, kay.”
“No!” She stomped her feet. The smile on her face being replaced with a frown and her once twinkling eyes is glaring at Junsu. “I said I want to watch you eat it now so you will eat it now! Girls, hold him.”
The other two girls who had been quiet the whole time, suddenly barge at Junsu and firmly hold his hands so that he can’t move. Junsu is so shocked that he doesn’t know how to react at the moment and his body freezes by the sudden unexpected situation.
The blonde girl took a handful of the chocolate that she claimed to make it with her love towards Junsu. She rips off the mask from Junsu’s face and in a matter of second, shove the chocolate into the latter’s mouth.
Junsu’s eyes widen and his breath chokes.
“How is it, sunbaenim? It’s delicious right? Of course it is, it symbolize my love for you sunbaenim.” The blonde girl squeals in joy.
However, her smile doesn’t last long when she finally realizes Junsu’s condition. The boy’s face turn pale, his eyes wide and swollen red and his plump pink lips become blue in a matter of second. The two girls quickly let go of him and ran off. As soon as they let his hands go, Junsu falls from his chair. His body squirming in pain on the concrete floor. Junsu feel like every pieces of soul in him is being pulled out. He feels like dying.
He heard a sniff, then another one. He heard some distinct chattering, whispers and voices. Then, he saw a white light entering his vision.
“Junsu? Junsu! God, Yunnie, he’s awake. Call for the doctor, quick.”
“Junsu’s awake? Oh, doctor. Right. I’ll call the doctor, boo.”
He saw a face. A familiar face. His brother’s face. He beamed a smile at his brother.
“Junsu~ Junsu~ Oh, God.” Jaejoong hugs Junsu’s weak body. His tears of happiness flow hard at the sight of his brother waking up from the verge of death.
“Hyung.” Junsu weakly whispers. “I’m fine.”
“Yes, I know. I know.” Jaejoong still had his head buried by Junsu’s side as he caresses the younger guy’s hand.
“Stop crying, hyung.”
“I’m an adult, I can do whatever I want.” Jaejoong jokingly whine earning him a faint smile from his dear brother.
When he receives the news about his brother, Jaejoong swear he stops breathing. When he saw his brother’s body on a stroller, being pushed into the emergency room, he swears he had die at that moment.
“Hyung, how long have I been dead?”
Jaejoong lifted his head and stare straight Junsu’s eyes. Those tired eyes tug his dead heart and push it to beat again. He knows he have to be strong for his brother so that he can take a better care of him and make sure such thing won’t happen to his brother ever again.
“Two weeks and no, you’re not dead. Don’t ever say that.” Jaejoong gently strokes Junsu’s pale face.
Junsu just smile. “Yes, umma.”
Everything still feels like a dream to Junsu. One moment he was about to die and regretting for not being able to see his brother ever again and one moment, here he is again, still alive and his brother is with him.
“Boo, the doctor’s here.” Yunho enter the room and went to stand beside Jaejoong. He flashes a relief smile at Junsu.
“Hi, Su. I miss you.”
Junsu smiles back. “I miss you too, hyung.” He slowly whispers.
Suddenly, a familiar scent enters Junsu as he inhale the air. The scent makes Junsu felt dizzy however, it wasn’t painful instead he kinda fine with the dizziness. It’s almost like he can already deal with the dizziness. The scent doesn’t make him feel nauseate still, it soothe him in an odd way.
Junsu’s gaze fall onto a face that had just entered the room. He’s wearing a white coat over peach colored shirt. His stare is soft almost penetrating Junsu’s vision sharply. And then he smiles, Junsu avow he’s blinded by it.
“Hi Junsu-shi. I’m Park Yoochun, your doctor.
For further treatment, Junsu had to stay hospitalized for another week till he’s fully recovered. After finally waking up from his deep sleep, Junsu can’t fall asleep that night. Jaejoong and Yunho had returned home after he ensures them that he’s fine on his own. He knows, his brother must have been spending his nights at the hospital, by his side all this time. He doesn’t want him to tired himself more, and ask him to go home and get proper sleep.
Junsu stare blankly out of the window from his bed. His body doesn’t allow him to move freely around yet. Feeling bored, he just stayed lying on his bed, reminiscing back his brother’s and Yunho’s words. The blonde girl or her name Jessica Jung, had already given her punishment, same goes with her two friends but because they didn’t know about Junsu’s allergy so their punishment was reduced. Junsu doesn’t care, it’s not his style to hold grudge against people.
Then his doctor say something about something which he hardly heard any of it because his attention was on his lips the whole time. He acknowledges the young doctor handsome features, his lazy eyes, high cheek-bone, rosy lips and the cute dimples when he smile, they’re just breathtaking. However, there’s a thing about him that had been disturbing Junsu’s mind. The doctor, Park Yoochun, his scent, he smell like chocolate. Junsu wonder why it doesn’t bother him at all.
“Ermm, Junsu-shi?”
Speaks of the devil.
Junsu turn his head towards the door. He smiles when he sees his doctor, with his head peeking through the door, smiling at him.
“You’re not sleeping yet?”
Junsu slowly shakes his head. “Don’t wanna sleep anymore.” The smell of chocolate emitted from Yoochun fill up the room and Junsu isn’t in his slightest to feel uncomfortable.
Yoochun chuckle. He pushes the door wider and enters the room. Closing the door behind him, he walks towards Junsu’s bed.
“I don’t mind keeping you company.” He said, casually sitting on the chair by the side of the bed.
Junsu nervously nodded. His eyes darted towards the empty, caramel wall in front of him, avoiding Yoochun’s gaze.
“Where’s your brother?”
“Home. I told him to sleep on his own bed tonight.”
“Yeah, he should. Jaejoong-shi spends every night here with you.”
“I know. I can hear him breathing, every night as he cry. I’ve made him worry so much.”
Yoochun sigh. “It’s not like you want to. Anyway, it’s my first time actually, meeting a case like you. Chocolate allergy, huh.”
“Yeah, it’s weird.”
“When did you find out about it?” Yoochun rest one of his hands on the bed, by Junsu’s thigh, making the other twitch quietly at the almost no contact.
“Four. It was my first Halloween, my first trick and treat. It was the first chocolate I ever had. Back in the days, we were so poor that we can’t afford to buy such thing.” Junsu smiles bitterly and Yoochun’s aware of it. “I ate one and end up in the hospital, like now. Since then, my family never celebrates Halloween again nor eat anything out of chocolate, well at least when they’re around me cause I know Jae-hyung eat them behind me. That’s it.”
Yoochun smile. He put his hand over Junsu’s as if trying to give him strength. Unaware of the blush creeping on Junsu’s cheeks because the latter had his head turn to the other side.
“It must have been hard on you. You can’t eat it and miss a lot of things in your life. I wish I could do something about it, Junsu-shi.” Yoochun sounds determined.
Junsu did fall asleep that night. After a light talk with his doctor, somehow his heart feels at ease and his eyelids slowly flutter close. He had a dream that night. He was eating chocolate and they were sweet. He had a sweet dream.
A nurse comes into his room for a checkup. Taking his medicine, Junsu feel bored being alone in the room. Then, a knock on the door could be heard. Junsu’s attention totally on the door as it swings open. Yoochun appear from behind the doctor in his doctor get up. Junsu automatically smile seeing the face of the doctor who had saved his life and taking care of him for the last two weeks.
Yoochun playfully wink at Junsu as he walks towards him. He put the bag that he carried onto the side table. Grinning, he look at Junsu’s flushed face.
“I have something for you, Junsu-shi.”
“You can drop the formality.” Junsu carefully suggest. He had been thinking about it last night before falling asleep and he believes by speaking informally, they can get close better. That is exactly what he wants. “I mean, you are the one who save my life so, you don’t have to be so formal with me, Yoochun…” He hesitates. “…hyung.”
Yoochun chuckle and nodded at the idea. “Ok then, I has something for you, Junsu.”
Yoochun took out a thermos from the bag and a cup before pouring the hot content into the cup. He handed Junsu the cup which the latter carefully take, cautious of the hotness. He brings the cup near his nose and immediately the nice smell of coffee and mixtures of other things which he can’t figures out filled him. He try to take a sip however, the hotness make him retreat.
Yoochun sits at the empty space on the bed with Junsu. “It’s too hot for you.” He reaches for Junsu’s hands and brings the cup that is still in Junsu’s hands towards him. Yoochun blows air at the hot coffee to cool it down for Junsu.
Junsu let the young doctor hold his hands firmly. Knowing the blush on his cheeks will appear as he can feel Yoochun’s hot breath against his hands, caressing his skin at the attempt to cool his drink. Just then, Yoochun lifted his gaze, with his mouth still blowing air at the liquid. The younger boy quickly darted his eyes away. Junsu was caught staring at his doctor. He heard a soft chuckle but didn’t dare to look back at the other.
“I think its cool enough. You can try it now, Junsu.” Yoochun let go of his hands. Junsu can’t hide his disappointment at the loss of contact as he sighs heavily.
He finally takes a sip of the liquid. A spark explodes in him as the drink flows into his throat. The taste of coffee is definitely there but he can’t figure out the other taste lingering in his mouth. It’s so strong and sweet at the same time and it left Junsu speechless.
Yoochun think that the sight of Junsu with his eyes wide in surprise, tinted pink cheeks, jaw slightly hanging open and his pink lips moist by the drink is the cutest thing he had ever seen and he can’t help but smile brightly at the sight.
“How is it?”
“It’s… I’m not sure. I never taste something like this before and I can’t explain it.” Junsu said the truth, he’s still fascinated by the taste and he can’t stop himself from taking another sip and another.
“I’m glad you like it.” Yoochun watch as Junsu gulp the whole thing down.
Junsu handed back the empty cup at Yoochun with a satisfied smile earning him a sweet chuckle from the older guy.
“What is that?”
“It’s my own recipe. It’s a secret, ssh.”
“So, I cannot know what it is?” Junsu unconsciously pouted. That definitely grab Yoochun’s attention, his hand automatically touch Junsu’s cheek and caress it.
“It’s secret from others but not from you. Because you’re special.”
Yoochun’s sleazy voice and gentle touches make Junsu shiver but he try to stay calm and pretend it’s nothing in front of the guy. “So, what is it?”
“Coffee.” Yoochun’s hands move from Junsu’s cheek to his hands. He held the others firmly. “With a little bit of cinnamon, cream, vanilla, mint and…” He trailed off. “…chocolate.”
Junsu’s face turns into a horror. “What? Are you trying to kill me?”
Yoochun tighten his hold of the others hand. “Do you feel like dying? Do you feel any pain?”
Junsu shakes his head furiously. “I feel great.” Junsu beam a smile and his eyes sparkle with happiness.
Yoochun stay silent, dazed by the sight of Junsu’s adorable expression. Sighing, he pulls Junsu closer. “Aish, Junsu. Actually, you’re killing me.”
“Eh?”
Junsu was about to retort back when he feel a pair of lips against him. It takes him the next second to realize that his handsome doctor who he had a crush on is actually kissing him.
Yoochun is everything like chocolate. He smell like one and taste like one. Yet, Junsu is fine with it.
Yoochun let go of Junsu’s lips. He stare deep into the other’s startled eyes and sigh.
“You’ve been killing me silently the whole time. The first time I saw you, lying helplessly on the bed, fighting for your life, I don’t know why but I can feel the pain you go through. And I’ve been dying to kiss these lips of yours.”
Junsu smile slightly at the honest confession which Yoochun takes as a green light for him to continue.
He lean again for another kiss and this time Junsu is prepared. He kisses back and gives as much Yoochun give him. Yoochun shifted on the bed, slowly his upper body is sprawled over Junsu as he trap the boy between his body and the soft mattress. Seconds turn to minutes when they finally broke off.
Junsu is breathing heavily as he looks at Yoochun, the other also had his eyes on him. Suddenly, he let out a string of giggles.
Yoochun watch in amusement at the giggling boy. This boy is too cute for him to handle.
“Yoochun.”
“Hmm.” Yoochun gather Junsu into his embrace and peck the still giggling boy on his nose affectionately.
“You taste like chocolate.”
“Oh, I did have some before coming here. My bad, sorry. Are you okay?” Yoochun feel worried about the boy allergy. Though he was fine after drinking the coffee but that was because he only put a drop of chocolate in that drink. So, it shouldn’t affect him much.
“That what’s funny, I’m okay. I don’t know why but I’m okay.” Junsu slowly encircle his arms around Yoochun’s neck and pull the older guy closer to him as he take the scent of his new-found lover.
“So, you hate my kiss?” Yoochun put a display of his puppy eyes resulting on the burst of laughter from Junsu. Yoochun find Junsu’s laugh sounds unique yet cute and then decided that he likes the sound of the boy’s laughter.
Junsu gently kiss the older guy’s rosy lips. “I like it. Maybe you’re the antidote to my allergy.”
“I think I am.” Yoochun grin dorkily and Junsu snorted at the older guy.
Just then, the door of his room swing open and a tall, lanky figure wearing school uniform come bursting in.
“Su-ah! Jae-hyung told me you’re alive again. I miss y-“ Changmin halted in his steps. He stares suspiciously at the two guy sprawled on the bed. “Oh, hi doc.” Changmin curve an awkward smile at the doctor.
Yoochun waves his hand at Changmin nonchalantly. “Hi, Changmin-shi.”
“What are you doing?” Changmin ask an obvious question considering he already know what exactly is the situation happening in this room.
“Nothing. Just hanging around with my patient.” Yoochun teasingly wiggle his eyebrow at Junsu causing a deeper blush on the latter’s cheeks.
Changmin snorted. “Yeah, right.” He walks nearer to Junsu’s bed and throw his bag pack on the floor.
“Eww, Min.” Junsu’s face becomes disoriented almost instantly when Changmin stands next to his bed. His hand shot up, covering his nose. “You stink. Get out from here, you’re contaminating the air in this room.”
“Yah~ I only had a bar. How can you be so sensitive? Besides, I think Yoochun-songsaenim smells stronger than me.” Changmin frown bitterly.
“I’m fine if it’s Yoochun. Mehrong~” Junsu sticks his tongue out at his best friend resulting on a hard smack to his stomach.
“Pfft. I knew it. You’re weird. Your allergy is weird. You’re a weird alien from ‘chocolate allergy’ planet.”
“Yah, I’m not an alien!” Junsu shouted almost instantly.
“You are. Only alien hates chocolate. Normal human-being like me, loves chocolate. So that makes you an alien.” Changmin take his revenge and stick his tongue out at Junsu.
Junsu pouted at the childish teasing. He turn to look at his doctor who had been watching them bickering with an amused smile decorating his face. Junsu tug at Yoochun’s coat, whining softly as if asking Yoochun to take a revenge for him on Changmin.
Instead, Yoochun lean forward and wipe away the pout on Junsu’s face with his lips.
“Okay, yuck. You guys are sick.” Changmin quickly grab his bag pack and sling it over his shoulder. “I’m outta here.” He makes his way out of the room, all the while muttering how Junsu had ruined his innocent mind and swear that he will never get the image out of him for the next ten years.
“That works.” Yoochun chuckle as he watch Changmin exited the room. When he turn back to look at his boyfriend, his eyes brows scrunch as Junsu is staring intensely at him. “What’s wrong? I thought you want to get rid of him?”
Junsu do nothing but smile. “Come here my sweet chocolate.”
“Oh, so I’m your chocolate now?” Yoochun ask with a naughty smirk.
“Yes, mine and only mine. Only I’m allowed to taste you.”
“And only I’m allowed to be your chocolate.”
Junsu giggles when Yoochun nuzzles his face by the crook of his neck. Glad that he finally found the cure to his allergy. Well, almost.
