So it's the end of the world and I wasn't aware of it!

So yesterday truck drivers went on strike in Spain, indefinitely…

… Obviously this is going to affect supplies distribution to gas stations, supermarkets, etc., all across the country. Basically,  in a matter of days if the strike continues, they could run out of supplies….

Therefore, let the craze begin…

As an illustration of that, I ( Read more... )

We had the same strike in Greece a couple of weeks ago, didn't last long. But it affected A LOT the distribution to gas stations. At the end, almost all stations where out of gas.

The supermarket weren't affected, at least in Athens.

and these words came out frome her mouth: “Sorry, I don’t understand nothing”. ARGH! That's fricking elementary English!

Ahahaha, that's a mistake that an awful amount of Americans make.

I'm always quite thrown by how much of an impact strikes can have on day-to-day life because it really doesn't happen often in the U.S. I mean the biggest strike we've had in the last 10 years was from television writers. Other than that and the Air Traffic Controller's strike back in the 80s, the only ones I can think of are a few metropolitan transit strikes once every couple of years - we really don't have many trade unions in the U.S. On the other hand, every time I've been to Europe I've encountered at least one minor strike.

Um, hi, that's me. Forgot to login. Also, I meant "awful lot of Americans," and now I can't edit/delete so my own poor English is up for all to see.

The funny thing is that in Spanish the correct way to negate is using a double negative! ¡No sé nada!*hee* Thus, this is a mistake most of us make when learning English! :)

The use of the double negative as an emphasizer is common in non-standard English. It's not prescriptive grammar, but it is descriptive.

I know that ;), but hearing that in the workplace when said secretary is talking to an international client of the firm makes me go WHAAAAAT?!

The curious thing is that double nevative is the correct way of making a negative statement in Spanish! O.o
