Backlogs, backlogs, and oh, did I mention backlogs?

So I have officially been in in Italy for 5 days. Quaint little place actually. Apart from needing to walk all day to just see under a tenth of what Rome has to offer. Haven't even begun to explore Bracciano (the village where I'm staying) yet. Apparently, there is a castle and a lake near by. We're planning to fish there when things have thawed ( Read more... )

Disney Princess, much? Watch out for singing tea cups and other inanimate objects inexplicably coming to life. XP

Oh wow, you went to the Bernini museum! So jealous. I love his sculptures. We studied him for Aesthetics class and the man's a genius. Which ones did you get to see?

Yum yum, gelato straight from the source. *drools*

YES, PICSPAMMY TIME! Can't wait. XDD

Well... EVERYTHING that was there actually. IMO one needs more than a measly 3 hours to appreciate everything. It's something to go back to over and over and over again ^__^

I liked the paintings on the ceilings and the statue of Apollo and Daphne the best.

The former just makes you want to lie down and stare at it and is made a thousand times more awesome by the fact that it creates the illusion that the ceiling has more depth than it really has in almost every room. Also, some (like the one in the Egyptian room) remind me of modern American comic art ala DC or Marvel.

The latter one is extraordinary because of the leaves that sprout from Daphne's fingers and hair and in between the running "couple". They are so thin. The audio guide said that the people studying the sculpture to restore it found out that if you tapped a leaf, it would ring out as if it were made of crystal. Also, it was really dynamic and fluid. Especially when it came to Daphne's metamorphosis into a tree ( ... )

No, no, please continue! I absolutely loved Apollo and Daphne the first time I saw it when our prof made us watch Simon Schama's The Power of Art (I highly recommend you watch it over at YouTube, it makes art all the more interesting, even to the casual observer). Were you able to see how Bernini made marble look like actual flesh? The leaves! Such artistry. I wonder why modern artists don't create something of that intricate level.

Oh, sorry about the Y!M! I don't check into it very much, but I'll sign in now more often for you. XP
