There's nothing like profanity to lower the pain factor. Although psychological, I agree certain words which are considered a no-no in society that when said out loud can provide instant mental and/or physical relief. If not the solution itself, then a nice band-aid, if you will, until the real relief comes along.

Intense pain has the opposite effect on me. When ever I bump into something, I'll yell, but when I do serious damage to myself I tend to freeze my vocale cords and tense up until the pain is past.
