I've made almond milk, but most of the time I don't bother straining out the meal. I just use it in smoothies, mostly, anyway. And yum! Is it ever good
( ... )
i think they add stuff to make it last. almond milk last only a few days in the fridge if it's fresh. doesn't make for easy selling lol.
it's hard to limit numbers of critters. i have to rein myself in with dogs because there are so many dogs in need, so many being killed because no one wants them. i want to save them all, bring them home, make them fat. but, like you said here, if the space and bank account can't handle any more, it's cruel to get more. on everyone involved. but it's soooo hard lol. i'll take some more pics of our chicks today. 4 of them have sprouted wing feathers! the other 2 are obviously a couple of days younger and still have only their nubbies, but they grow so quick. thankfully my space here is so huge i can handle more chickens. just not more dogs!
I am just waiting for Ronnie to stop at a feed store and pick some more chicks up, on the way home from work. I hope he doesn't, but I miss their being little. And Emilia is too smart for her britches. Watching the cat go over the fence, she realizes how to do it in steps, even with her wings clipped, and we've found her in the yard a time or two. She may not make it as long as the others, if she does that too many times. Odd, though. They have all they need for food and water, and then some, but she is the only one that really wants to explore. The others are happy as long as we're nearby.
is she a golden comet? my goldens don't last because they're just too curious. always going off the furthest first. one of them is still alive but she's the only one that hasn't been nosey. all the others proved that curiosity kills chickens as well as cats. which is so sad because i really love the nosey ones. and the 3 that died i was super fond of.
you have to have the mother kefir "grain". once you have that, you just put it in milk on the side and a day or two later you have kefir. you can't make it without the mother, though. people here sell them on ebay, post them on craigslist, or just get some given them by someone else who has some. the mother grows each time so you land up with way too much. i'd send you some except you're across the "pond" and i don't know if it would survive such a long journey.
there apparently some way to sex them because a lot of the stores "guarantee" that they are females. these said "straight run" which might mean non-sexed, but i'm not sure. i got them mostly on impulse lol. my rooster is getting up there in years, though, so i don't mind if one of them turns out to be a nice boy. i just wish one of my hens would get broody again. i feel so sad for the poor motherless chicks. instead of their growing time being in the warm dark of under-mama, they get their warmth from a bright light. totally ass backwards to how they're supposed to grow. :(
Strange question, but do domestic chickens reared in a "household" setting recognize people as individuals? Do they like being held and petted? Is there such a thing as a "lap chicken?"
definitely! mine live outside and there are a lot of them, so none of them are that close to us. but they certainly can be. they're very sweet and lots of people find them to be great pets. some of ours are very friendly and will squat down to be pet and picked up. some breeds are known for being friendlier than others. nearly every Golden Comet we've had has been super nosey and friendly, to the point it gets them killed :( - only the one that's not so friendly has survived. curiosity definitely killed the chicken as well as the cat!
my friend katy let her battery rescues in the house and would just clean up after them. mine are NOT allowed in the house. they already have the yard and the porch lol

And they've got each other for company, and to sleep in a cuddle pile with.
